If you have an accident, an insurance company is highly unlikely to uncover a remap - whereas a tuning box will stick out like a sore thumb. I do hope this isn't going to turn into an ethical debate about declaring mods.
If your car is still under warranty, and/or you bring it to BMW for servicing, your remap can disappear if BMW do software mods. Likewise if there's 'rogue' software found on the ECU, BMW may not cover warranty claims.
Car is not under warranty so that is not an issue. Regarding accidents, assuming the mod is not declared, my initial thought was that a tuning box is preferable because it can be removed, but thinking more about it that depends on the severity of the accident.
