I use BMW 5W-30. The brand doesn't matter, it's the level of specification that matters and most oils sold in America don't meet that. Majority synthetic oils are classified ACEA-1 and BMW recommends ACEA-3. Only a few oils are BMW approved in America, and I still don't prefer to use them because it's either LL-01 Castro Syntec 0W-30 or Mobil 1 0W-40. I prefer not to cheap out on oil and just use what BMW sells, so I order it from Tischer in bulk.
BMW recommends 5w30 or 5w40, either works fine. I wouldnt use a 0 weight

castrol and mobil 1, especially mobil are shit oils and I would avoid them. there are non LL approved oils costing half as much which provide more protection, like shell rotella. I would stick to liqui moly or motul.
