a retrofit is possible. I have a July 2011 F10. I bought the parts (110euro) from germany and so far have tried them electrically but am yet to take off the rear bumper to fit them. The FRM module must have recent (post 2011) software otherwise it won't recognize the signal from the smart opener. Once you connect the smart opener module you update the coding on the FRM and kick to open works like a 2012 model. You must have comfort access in the first place though, you cannot add this to a non-comfort access car.
