This happened all the time on my old 2007 X5. The problem was so bad I lemon lawed the car. The warning of increased battery discharge was merely a symptom of a serious problem with the car's electrical system. Three times over seven months, I would start to get this warning. And each of those times, my car completely shut down on the highway. To say it was scary situation would be a gross understatement! The first time the dealer replaced the battery, the second time they replaced the voltage regulator, and the third time I lemon lawed it.
I wouldn't wish that problem on anyone, so I hope this isn't anything like what you're having....
