Of course we didn't have to worry about suicide bombers or random mortar shells, so there's a couple magnitudes of difference when it comes to personal security.

You hit it on the nail man. That is typical in the communications/IT world...because we live by the adage: "If it aint broke don't fix it". We get paid basically to react to a problem most of the time.
