F10 Windshield Replacement fun

I've learned so much about BMW F10 windshields I thought I would share.

I bought a 2011 F10 528i and its windscreen is really pitted and NOT OEM or BMW some knockoff aftermarket glass the previous owner put in. While installing a dash cam I barely tapped it and now I have 4 8 inch cracks. Total junk. Never believe the line "its just as good". its not.

In shopping for replacement I learned Pilkington makes the BMW glass. The BMW logo can be ordered via Safelite its about $974 in 2026 without tax but including installation and new rain sensor and silicone pad.

Most insurance will only pay for aftermarket and you are out of pocket for the rest. Most "glass coverage" you buy form your insurance does not necessarily cover full replacement, required for any cracks over 6 inches. They only cover repair of chips and cracks under that length. That was eye opening I've been paying for glass coverage this whole time, some insurance has 2 levels of glass coverage be sure you know what you are paying for. Honestly I can get a chip repair by a pro with a vacuum machine for $60 why pay $50 a month for "glass coverage". heck I've used those $10 kits at AutoZone with acceptable results on beaters. Insurance will use your comprehensive coverage and charge you the deductible if you don't have glass coverage.

You can get BMW logo'd glass at Safelite or the dealer. Dealership is in the thousands of dollars. At least you don't have to do any homework just cut a check and schedule and done. BMW won't even accept a lease return if you replaced the glass and it doesn't have the BMW logo. You can use this requirement with your insurance which in my coworkers case waived deductible the minute he said "its a lease". YMMV

Now even more info, Pilkington owns a Chinese glass firm Fuyao so you really have to know what you are buying. If you ask for Pilkington you may get their budget offering Fuyao, look at the label in the corner before they install it. UPDATE- I shouldn't bash Fuyao even BMW is using it in newer cars, the quality of Pilkington has gone down in the last few years and some things like HUD are fuzzier vs Fuyao is now considered premium in the market.

Now you have the all important decision of what you want, aftermarket, Pilkington without BMW logo, or Pilkington with BMW logo. Then you have to decide if you want the shade strip on the glass. BMW in the past really made a big deal of their solar glass reduction benefits of the green tinted shade strip. Then they offered grey tinted shade strip too. Last was just regular no shade strip. My VIN decoder tells me originally my car had no 3AP (?) option so I assume to be factory correct I need no shade strip, my current aftermarket cracked screen has a grey shade strip. Research suggests now ALL replacement glass even BMW or OEM can no longer get any shade strip, so that sucks if you like that you have to go aftermarket. My independant said Pilkington with shade strip is backordered and will never be made again. UPDATE: 2 BMW dealerships says the shade strip was never offered, EU got a "solar glass" option not US.

I've found Safelite being 2nd most expensive, with dealer basically double the price and likely just using safelite anyway on site. The best deal seems to be independent glass shops who really know their stuff. No offense to Safelite customer service but they are very limited in the glass industry all they know is what they offer and can't order any supplier you want or have experience with all of them.

Independants have used them all, ordred them all, and have opinions on what they think is best. They also seem less corporate and more family based long tenures better expertise than some corporation dictating cost cutting and rushing jobs for volume.

If paying out of pocket I found a place in So Cal that will do a Mygrant or Pilkington no logo for $329. Faith Auto Glass in Temecula if anyone is nearby. They also feel Mygrant is better than Pilkington however I'm sticking to what BMW used in 2011 which is stupid I know but at least on resale if anyone complains about no BMW logo I can show them its the exact same brand sans logo.

toy4two, appreciate your post.

Once you get your glass installed in Temecula, can you post your post-install thoughts?

Might be worth the drive up north to replace my windshield as I was not impressed with Safelite installation damage to my leather dashboard or the amount of broken glass they left everywhere when trying to remove the glass...

Great post & write-up!

I didn't realize the Pilkington/Fuyao relationship.
+1 to finding a quality Independent glass shop. Go in, talk to the guys/owner, and get a feel for who you want to do this work. Safelite can be hit or miss.

If you have HUD & the KAFAS camera, I'd strongly recommend sticking with OE.

+1000 to $50 Safety Glass Deductible on Insurance Policies
(My replacement was ~$2k a couple years ago - BMW Glass / KAFAS Calibration / Labor)

Does the car need calibration after replacement?

From personal experience, Benz and VWAG need calibration fo auto headlights and sometimes cruise control etc.

We changed the windshield in an F25 we had and also noticed fuzzy HUD.

If you have the driver's assist package (where the cameras read the speed limit signs, high beam assistance, collision warning, etc) then yes, the KAFAS system needs to be calibrated.

Generally insurance will cover base glass and other the other necessities. You can ask the shop to upgrade to bmw glass for about another $3-500.

I just had my 2013 550ix with HUD windshield replaced at Safelite. Cost $430.
Its OEM equivalent ones and everything went well. No calibration needed as mine doesn't have the advanced driver assist. The HUD and rain sensor work fine.

What screen did you get in the end toy4two? My M5 is in for one through insurance tomorrow morning, but I’m a little aprehensive as I have the climate comfort windscreen (EU car). HUD and KAFAS as well. My hope is that the cheaper manufacturers haven’t bothered making the UV filtered glass since it was a rare option so I end up with Fuyao/Pilkington.

BMW quote for the genuine part alone before fitting was 10x the insurance excess so I figured it’s worth a shot.
