2011 535i Transmission Jerk?
I bought a 2011 535i non-sport from my local Motor Werks dealer recently...
ever since i bought it it has a slight rough idle almost like a mis fire but not really a mis fire... no CEL or anything.... When the transmission shifts... its slow, choppy, and very jerky going up and down the gears... any input? software update? trans fluid change?? Any help would be appreciated! Gets slightly better once the car is fully warmed up! Last edited by izaazk; 08-19-2016 at 11:12 PM.. Reason: Warm up change |

Not sure if there's the Alpina TCU flash for F10's AT. If so definitely have it flashed, but could be a separate problem your having. See if the dealer has a recall. I have a MT so for me it's the clutch delay valve that is a POS.

Definitely ask dealer to update your Istep level to current. Or at very least check service history and current Istep to make sure it's reasonably current. Also check to make sure all services have been completed.

I will ask if they can do a software update...
would it also fix my rough idle? like it feels like a misfire but it isn't one... NO CEL.. Apparently the service history said plugs were changed before I bought the car.. I don't know what else could be the issue.. every cold start as the revs come down it shakes like a mis fire.... also when letting the brake pedal go off a red light you also feel the same vibration would a jb4 help me fix these problems? |

I had a simliar issue in my E60 545i. The 1-2 shift was HORRIBLE! It usually happened for the first 5-10 minutes and only in colder weather.
The E60s had known issues with the Mechatronics unit, which also caused it to leak oil. My short term solution was to get a transmission oil change/add oil. First thing I would check is your oil level. |

I have the same year but with xdrive and have gone through the trials and tribulations lol. Check your ignition coils and make sure they are operating correctly, if not replace all 6 with the Bosch ones. The coils or one of them sometimes go bad and it’s better to replace them all. Also make sure there’s no vacuum leaks. The easiest one to do is take it on the highway and punch it hard, if you do get a drive train malfunction while doing that, then one of the injectors May be clogged.
That’s the engine side, the transmission is a moody beast. A software update may fix it and mine behaves like yours (I never did the update). I changed my fluid at 70k so I know it’s not that. But I do see that if it’s 60f outside it’s silky smooth but any higher or lower it’s either hanging on cold drives till warm or hard shifting after long drives while hot. |

I would do a full service of front differential, rear differential, transfer case (remember to do Guibo too since the exhaust comes off) and even transmission service since you’re at the exact mile service mark to do it too. I’d do that for sure asap before it’s too late and the fluid goes black. My transmission is tuned so tbh it jerks sometimes on takeoff with first gear but I think it’s fine still. As far as your rough idle, I had this similar issue, definitely ask for a smoke test of even do one yourself if you can. Put smoke through the intake pipe to see if any leaks are present. Leaks leaks leaks will cause rough idles. But if you wanna start off, maybe just do spark plugs, coils, and clean the maf sensor which is very easy to do as a diy. These cars are extremely sensitive so definitely check for a leak. I’d also check the pulleys and belt tensioner especially the harmonic balancer/crank pulley as these are very common to wobble and cause vibration. Everything I said by the way I’ve fixed on my car and it’s vibration free for the most part. On cold start I know what you feel as I feel it but it’s not bad tbh, it could be a leaky injector which is very common to cause rough idle on cold start. Also there is plenty of threads on the rough idle we experience on the f10 535, it’s very common. Take in account of everything I said as I went through everything you have already and got my car to solid condition so I’d definitely take this all into consideration when diagnosing. Let me know what it comes out to be!!
