Yeah, I think just take it to a shop. By the time you get all the tools and chemical, you will probably end up spending more money.
I did that once. Bought one of those mechanical buffer. Tried it, I did not do a good job. Maybe I am just dumb..... ha ha. |

Paint it silver...
Kidding of course, but after owning two black BMW's I can confidently say that you might want to get used to some level of swirl in the paint - it seems to be a built in feature. However, I had really good luck with detailers who 'specialize' in dark colors. A guy I had out a few years ago spent literally 6 hours on my car and it was flawless. It only took 4 or 5 hand washes to bring the swirls back. To me, a well cared for black BMW is art on wheels - but it comes with added responsibility unfortunately. |

YOu need to search and do research, its not exactly rocket science.
You prob need a compound and then a plish. I like Menzerna. If you accept a certain level of swirl, then Menzerna Powerfinish won't eliminate swirls, but gives the clear coat some shine. Remember compounding always strips away from the clear coat, thats how you remove swirls...you "sand" them away. With a random orbital buffer though you should be fine. I'd just do it yourself...will take you a day. |

OP,
It’s really dependant on the level of correction you want. That’s actually what the process of removing swirls is; paint correction. Swirls are very fine scratches in the surface of your clearcoat, (sometimes deeper) that can be corrected with compounding/polishing. You can do it yourself with the right equipment and polishes. However, with black cars, especially BMW jet black and some other “pure black” cars, the level of skill required to achieve better than average correction is high and usually requires lots of practice. Just some friendly advice; Take it to a highly regarded detailing shop and get it evaluated. Likely they can recommend a level of service to satisfy both your appearance goal and your budget. Go online to Detailed Image.com and read up on the products and proper washing techniques to help you keep a swirl free finish. They also have a link to help find respected local detail shops. Take it from me, an east coast detailer who owns nothing but black cars (BMWs)…They are a labor of love. But, NO other color looks as good on a vehicle as a highly polished Black Good luck! http://www.detailedimage.com/

As noted, I think you really have to decide how much effort YOU want to put into the correction. There are tons of shops that can make your car's paint perfect. That being said, once your car is corrected, you may want to consider washing your car with the two bucket method using grit guards. Most cars get scratched because people use only one bucket of suds. So you are ultimately taking dirty water with fine grit and rubbing it into your car's clear coat. Hence, thats where the scratches are coming from. Check out any of the detailing forums in how to do the two bucket wash. It's pretty simple. But, it will help maintain your vehicles finish much longer. Good luck.
Check out the forums on either one of these. They have plenty of how to videos. You may decide to do the paint correction yourself. I happen to enjoy it. Autogeek.net Adamspolishes.com |

Scratch on Speedo/Tach
Hi, I am new to the forum but wanted to ask a quick question. I am looking at buying a 2013 550xi from the dealer that was driven by the owner for about 3500 miles. As I was about to purchase the car I noticed that the speedo and Tach cluster has a scratch on the lower part of the cluster. The dealer gave me $400 credit but does anyone have any idea if this can be buffed out with anything? Would hate to buy the car and find out that there is nothing I can do. Any help would be great. Thanks

Go to autogeek.net Search under Wolfgang products, they have a swirl remover kit, and finish only with the Wolfgang Fusion wax, they have an 1 hour online video on the wolfgang products that teach you everything step by step, before you buy. The products are expensive, but so is the car...and they work...buy the cobra 600 microfiber cloths, they are well worth it along with the cobra waffle weave drying towel, get the super big size, it is used in the video. You can also go to www.wolfgangcarcare.com They are the same company as autogeek, you will also find the video there.

I dont think you can get that scratch out, my post was for the swirl marks, but call these people, they are very helpful, tell the dealer you want that part replaced, I had no problem getting a few wood panels replaced when I bought my car.
