Is it hard to steal the F10?
With the keyless entry fob, will it be hard for the thief to steal the F10?
I just want to know if it would be a good idea to purchase LoJack with the car. Can the thief be able to hot wire the car? |

I'm curious too especially after six BMW's were soled from New York Auto Show (2010). According to the New York Post, six BMWs, including the BMW 550i Sophisto, were stolen while they were being processed at the a processing center at a New Jersey port.
I never heard a follow up of how this exactly happen, but I will assume BMW team didn't leave the keys inside the cars... |

Can't you set the immobiliser code on the F10 like you can with previous BMW's? Even if the scum ball had my key without knowing the code he can't start it... mind you he would have to know the code to my house alarm and the code to my garage door and pry the key from my cold dead fingers...

Weren't the cars stolen directly from inside the port? I'm guessing the guys who stole those BMW were real professionals and had planned it out + inside help? Pretty sure the NJ port would have at least some kind of decent security.
I hope it would be difficult for any conventional thief to steal the car. As far as I know the car is equipped with the motion sensor on the inside of the car which I believe is supposed to immobilize the engine/sound the alarm if it detects movement. The alarm is also supposed to sense if the car rocks too much in one direction (someone smashing the window or trying to tow the car). Depending on where you live you could get a decent discount on your insurance with LoJack to make the cost not as bad. |

All you need is a laptop and the right software ( which insiders will have) and you don't even need a key, straight in and away, simple.

I had a friend with an older BMW that when the car was delivered, one key was "missing". He took the car from the dealer anyway (I would have insisted on a new keys/locks), and sure enough, 5 months later the car was stolen from his driveway. Apparently there was a racket at the port where keys, VINs, etc. were grabbed with the intent to steal the vehicles later. If someone wants your car, it will be stolen. There are clearly "inside jobs" going on all the time. But I don't lose sleep over it. That's what insurance is for, and the odds of theft are minuscule.

With BMW Assist, which has all the LoJack features, why would you pay for LoJack?

The joke is "IF you lock yourself OUT" of the car just ring BMW assist with your pass word and they will unlock the car remotely for you. If they can do this so can the "informed thief".

BMW Assist will only track a stolen car in some countries, Italy and Germany are two of them and i know they said they won't in the UK... It comes as "BMW Tracking" However you can phone them and ask them to tell you where you parked your car if you forgot... go figure!

interesting topic, i am still deciding on what car i would like to get but if i was to get an f10 i would put lojack. the way i see it, whether or not if bmw assist can track the car, lojack will be one more thing a thief would have to worry about.
in other words, you can never have too much security. |

I read that David Beckham, the English soccer star, had two expensive cars (can't recall makes) stolen in London in recent times. The article said that it's believed that the thieves intercepted his key codes with a laptop and a special program (which is supposedly easy to find) and were thus able to easily enter and start the cars.

If a pro wants your car, any car is easy to steal. The question you may want to ask is whether, once stolen, you're any more or less likely to get the car back.
There seem, of course to be two camps on part of that query: 1 - Folks that don't want the car back because they feel it'll have been trashed by the thief and they'd rather have a replacement vehicle. 2 - Folks that want their car back.

I'm with "1"... If I ever get a car stolen, I don't want it back. Not my choice if the car is to be found, but it's going straight to the dealer to be traded in for another one. |
