Homemade Air Ram/Scoop
Had extra time 2 nights ago since class was cancelled, so I decided to make an air scoop out of this dirty toolbox in the corner of my garage...the entire project took me about 30 minutes to complete but I'm not sure if I like it or not. Let me know what you think
BLACK FTW - Can't even tell the scoop is there

I love zero dollar DIYs as much as anyone and more power to you, but my concern with this is two-fold:
First. While I suspect RPI didn't use a wind tunnel or any fancy flow simulators, their product at least looks fairly smooth. This could have a pretty significant effect on airflow - which afterall is the whole point of the scoop. Just from the pictures I'm not sure how much flow you're getting through the DIY scoop. Second. Unless you are really good at fabricating stuff, homebuilt stuff put in the airflow has a way of rattling loose. Assuming the scoop works I'd probably be willing to pay extra for something molded out of single piece with at least a couple of good stout mounting points. It can't hurt to try a home brew scoop, but I think for the price the RPI may be worth it. |

^^^Yup I feel the same way. I can try to tilt it a lil more to direct a better air flow but overall, as long as its better than stock I'm happy. I didn’t even know that bmw blocked the air intake entrance with that big'O plastic cap. I drove her on the freeway hard this afternoon and I felt better response (Buttocks dyno) and afterward I popped the hood and my intake (K&N cone n pipe) felt honestly cooler than before.
I thought about using screws but the gray 3M double sided molding tape (super strong) would be better in this case. The scoop won’t be going anywhere…plus it weights next to nothing.

^Nope, names Bruce Just got home from LA and I have to say my ghetto scoop works
I can say now that I recommend this diy to anyone. It's Black in color so no one can see the scoop or the quality anyways...as long as it works. I’ll guarantee you can feel a difference driving on the local streets or on the highway, if you’re unhappy afterwards you can always purchase the real deal. And my engine compartment where my intake was, it's always hot day or night after a drive. Since the scoop I've popped the hood and check the temp after every drive and it’s much much cooler. That’s pretty much it…I guess I’m keeping this diy mod on the car.

Thanks!!! It cant really compare to the build quality of the real thing but im saving myself 125 buckaroos. The scoop is not noticable at all becuase my car is lowered and its Black. Nobody will see/notice the scoop unless i told them it was there
BlackSapphireZ - your one of the first persons to own a Z4...I remember searching the forums and internet and admire your car before i decided to buy mine.

^A scoop is a scoop that no one can see. Why don’t you go tell people who put replica wheels on their cars? It’s a bmw right?
on another note...you should get the M-coupe instead of the 135 imo

I am sorry, I am just joking around. I give you an A for making the mod + BMW and many manufactures and turners first proto-types look bad the first time out. My friend did a home made scoop on his Z3 M & when it rained very hard one day to much water went into the engine and caused some damage. I have done so many home made mods some look & work good some no comment. It is so hard to increase any amount of HP out of a normaly aspirated BMW. Most of the time you end up spending a lot more money than the return on your investment. I think that is why I am looking at the 135I.
I met Ron Styger at the 2000 BMW Z3 home-coming he dose great work. I bought many of his mods for my 1999 M coupe. I loved that car Thanks I agree so far the Z4 M coupe is my choice, I love the engine. I want to drive the new 135I + its a turbo car much more HP with a few mods. |
