Water wetter in IC coolant system to reduce IAT (N63TU)
Alright been thinking about running straight distilled water + water wetter in our intercooler coolant system for this summer (alot of spirited driving and track days soon). I've done some research and it seems that water wetter is very effective in water cooled intercoolers and could help reduce IAT as much as 10F. Currently, I'm seeing consistently high IAT's (100F+ WOT no matter ambient temps, even with front mount intakes). My last track day IAT's were getting above 110F during the runs...lots of heat soak after...not good. Anything helps with our N63's. Will definitely monitor this and report back once I do it. Will change back to coolant water mix once winter comes.
The coldest my area has seen the last few years is -11F in winter the last 10 years. I'm thinking maybe water 70/30 (or 80/20) BMW coolant for the engine? Don't want any additives to this system. Anyone know how hot our intercooler coolant system runs? It is separate from engine coolant and I don't think it runs anywhere near boiling point for straight water, otherwise our IAT's would be extremely high...but I could be wrong. Posted this both in 5series and 6series (6series less active). Would appreciate any thoughts! |

I use water wetter in all my cars and motorcycles, it does what is says it does, and thats keep things a little bit cooler!

Does the coolant circuit use a pressure rated cap or other release? If so, that would give you an idea how hot BMW thinks the system could run. If not, it's pretty safe to assume it will never reach the boiling point of water.
I always wondered if there's enough residual cooling capacity in the AC return line to do any meaningful cooling of the air intake charge. Not for track use where you're not using the AC, but maybe for street use where you're using AC constantly and only blasting the car now and then. An accumulator could store chilled coolant and release with a boost trigger. Sorry, just thinking out loud. |
