Warning: Engine Oil Needs to Be Added

I left my car at the body shop, and they had to repair the door components of my car and make sure all the corresponding electrical units were in order after my car was hit unattended in a parking lot.

After driving the car a little over fifty miles, I received a warning light that engine oil needs to be immediately added, yet in the IDrive system I have until 6,000 miles or 01/25 to do an oil change. I don't know what is off here. Has this occurrence happened to anyone else?

That means it's low on oil. Stop and measure the oil level from the iDrive. Check for leaks- oil filter housing, valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket are the 3 common places. You don't want to run that engine low on oil or you'll spin a rod bearing.

I am trying to figure out if there are two sensors for the engine oil reservoir being as though I have differing information the car is indicating to me. If a warning light differs from the corresponding information in the iDrive interface, then I do not see why my post was not a valid concern.

Just ignore anything negative from people. There is only 1 sensor for oil level. The point we're making is the oil change interval has absolutely nothing to do with the warning message that it's low on oil, and it's very important that you don't run it with low oil. Did you measure the oil level through iDrive? Depending on what it tells you will determine how much oil you need to put back in it. Once that's done, you'll need to find the cause of the low oil which will likely be one of the 3 leak-prone areas I mentioned before.

Oil at minimum level & Oil Service Interval are two different things as mentioned above. As other's mentioned...you need to run your OIL LEVEL Measurement which you should find on the Vehicle Status screen in iDrive.

If you got a warning that you are 1 or 2 liters low on oil...this has nothing to do with your 10K/12month (which ever comes first) oil change interval. When that time comes...you will get messages that its time for SERVICE. Again, this is different from a warning that you need to add oil because you are at the minimum level.

You need to top up your oil (not change your oil) based on the warning you have:

Always keep one quart in your trunk. When it is low, top it off. I measure my oil once a week just to be on the safe side. Measure it when you just got to your destination is the best because it is warmed. It takes a minute or less to measure.

Also, as it is instructed, before you measure your oil level, make sure it is parked on the flattest surface you can find for proper measurement.
