Picked up a used Remus axleback from another forum member. Wanted to share my install experience and tips for others that may do this in the future.
I jacked up the car via the diff jacking point and placed jacks under the plastic jacking points for support. I started by removing the M-Sport diffuser. 5 clips were removed and then struggled to remove the diffuser. I read another users thread which said to just give it a good pull and it will pop off. To my surprise, I gave it a good yank and it came disconnected every clip and popped off easily. From there I started with the chain style pipe cutter. The tool I rented from the local auto parts store worked surprising well and gave a clean cut after about 5-10 minutes per side of sawing back and forth. I used white lithium grease on the rubber hangers and with some leverage from a pry bar I was able to drop the factory exhaust off. The Remus exhaust slid cleanly over the factory exhaust and clamped easily enough. I installed the tips but waited to tighten them in place until after cutting the factory M-Sport diffuser. I reached out to the Remus rep in California and he was able to obtain the templates needed to cut the factory diffuser. I cut them out and taped them to the diffuser. I utilized a hot knife, essentially a razor blade attached to a soldering iron to cut the plastic diffuser. The first attempt showed that there was still more to be cut to clear the tips. So I free handed the rest of the cuts. It came out a lot cleaner than a dremel would have but still left something to be desired. I will likely add a rubber trim piece to make it look more finished. Overall cold start is fairly loud, however quiets down to a nice humm once warmed up. I would rate the idle to slightly louder than an F30 335i but quieter than a 335i with MPE. For another frame of reference, it is still quieter than my friends stock C63 and other friends 981 Cayman S that dropped by to assist and heckle while I struggled with the exhaust cutter. I was genuinely surprised at how tame, but clean the exhaust sounded. From other members accounts of the exhaust I expected it to be somewhat loud! Driving in comfort the exhaust is barely heard with the windows down. Driving in sport and somewhat aggressively you could hear the burble between shifts that weren't there with the slower shifting of comfort mode. I feel that this is the perfect "gentleman's exhaust" that gives it more oomph but doesn't attract unwanted attention. That said I personally will be looking to add a downpipe at some point to increase power and sound volume.
