Hi,
I can't remember where I read it now, but I think the car needs to be paired with a mobile phone with internet tethering enabled. It might have been the BMW bluetooth page, yes it was http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...=EU&country=UK "Data communication BMW TeleServices To make use of BMW TeleServices, the service provider needs to unlock the 'Tethering' tariff option." Its a bolt on option with most iphone contracts. Has anyone with the tethering enabled on an iphone contract If anyone has a Google Nexus with their own contract it might work with that. I also read somewhere the BMW telmatics does not use 3G so the internet via it must be quite slow. I am not sure how usable the BMW internet service would be when its enabled. Paired with a 3G phone on the other hand the speed might be ok! Good luck! |

I think you only have internet and all the stuff if you are registered with bmw online/connected drive. Check this out: http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/connected...ml?siteID=1312

Hi Lukes Warm,
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/su...ersonal/434541 http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/su...ersonal/432799 Moe info on Orange Teathering but you might want to check with BMW this is what you need as you probably will have to pay Orange extra. I don't know for sure if this will work but very interested to find out! http://www1.orange.co.uk/mobileterms...one-terms.html Inclusive Mobile Internet - Mobile internet browsing applies within the UK only. Any use outside the UK will be charged at the relevant international rates. Mobile Internet browsing does not include event charges such as for ringtones or games (transport costs for these events are included). Not to be used for Internet Tethering (e.g. using your handset as a modem - separate Tethered Data bundles are available). Additional mobile internet browsing is charged at 60p/day. |

This may work actually. I'd be interested to hear the results, although O2 internet tethering is nearly £10 a month, which isn't really worth it just for the BMW Internet browsing capability.
It only works while stationary, and you need the iPhone handy, which already has a pretty decent browser so what's the benefit? Guess it depends on how well the iDrive works as a mouse, and if the graphics of the BMW browser are vastly improved over the BMW online portal i.e. it needs to offer a better browsing experience than the iPhone 4, which I doubt it will. |

Does anyone know, if the Internet is available only for the "Professional Media" version?
Mine is Pro and I do have the Google search.

And the answer seems to be tethering, BMW first question was is tethering enabled and orange said this would need to be enabled at a cost of 38p per day... Not really worth it IMHO.

I think the car has it's own mobile phone connection built in to it. Otherwise how do you send addresses from the iPhone app to it when nowhere near it? I don't have tethering enabled on my phone but I can do a Google search, get the weather forecast and the news in my car.

Hi F11 Black,
Yep that is specific services that BMW provides as part of the assist contract they indeed are accessed via the cars sim card, teathering is not required for this. I think what Lukes Warm was looking for was full internet browsing via the i drive to any site on the internet, for that it would appear the teathering needs to be enabled. Cheers Paul |

Has anyone in the UK with a post September build got the internet working yet? I have a week 39 build and everything works great apart from the missing Internet service. The car is connected via bluetooth to a Blackberry Curve 8900.

Mine is post september and i have EVERYTHING it seems except for the full internet browser... however how often would i ever use it... probably once a year! There is a built in SIM you can pay BMW £299 to use that... again doesn't seem worth it when i have an iphone with limitless data. One thing i wish i had i really really wish is the office function :-(

Yeah, likewise. I'm waiting for the blackberry os6 to reach our shores and then hopefully the office functionality will work. It frustrates me that there is not one phone that covers all the features! There is always a compromise.
@lukeswarm. Do you have contact images working?

Well I added on tethering just to test the Internet feature. Deleted my iPhone pairing, and..... nothing. No extra menu, no change to the available services (Office, Telephone, BT Audio) for the phone etc. So basically a waste of time.

@eaglerest,
Sorry to hear that, did you call BMW ? It might be something they can enable on your assist contract now that you have teahtering enabled on your phone? Or perhaps they can advise if it should work? Might be worth a phone call? Good luck! Cheers p |

Thanks for the feedback egalesrest,
I guess the positive is that it will be avialable at some piont. Dad's online functions were working in his car then they stopped. It looks like the car had been trying to do an update, which is interesting because its a week 37 build car. Apparently it failed and crashed alll the online functions. (no warnigns came up) He only found this out because he went to the service deparment today and the hooked it up to the diagnostics. They applied the update manually and got BMW assist to re initislise and its all working again! Will take a look over the weekend and see if this latest update has the internet functions, I don't suppose it will but I will check anyway. BMW UK are not allways 100% correct, they told us when we ordered the car, that even though it had acc it wouldn't have the rear collision warning but it does..... If you look on here http://bmw.connecteddrive.info/stage.php It says both the collision warning and internet via customer mobile phone IS available in the UK filter by UK. In the past I thought this was in accurate because of the response from BMW UK on the collision warning. I am wondering now if there is away to get the internet working in the car via your mobile phone. Eaglesrest do you know does your car the latest updates? My problem is I don't have a phone with tethering enabled.... Last edited by pmw103; 10-21-2010 at 05:05 PM.. |
