Icon straight 6 pertol doomed?
Is the iconic and sublime BMW straight 6 petrol engine soon to be a thing of the past? To think of the 528i being a four-potter is hard to bear, I remember my uncle having a 528i back in the seventies I drooled over how it sounded. I have had several 'sixers' over the years and I think the sweetest of all was the 2.5 variant, found in the e39,e46 (I think under the 523i, 323i name) with matching stroke and bore it was an absolute peach of an engine - it felt like you could rev it forever, I spent the whole time bouncing off the rev limiter as it never sounded harsh or unrefined. I am not sure if I will ever get back into a 6'er petrol, but my memories are strong and their unique sound, smoothness and performance will live long in my heart

Who'd have thought, just a few years ago, that we'd be doing sub 6 seconds 0-60 and getting almost 40mpg. |

The BMW 1er and 3er begin the full Turbo roll-out. Which is also seaguing towards the X1 , 5er and Z4. X3 is next. And by 2013 there will be no NA BMW engines.

As above, 530i is a new for MY12 EU-spec model. Basically it's just a N53 528i correctly rebadged as 530i with exactly the same engine tune as the N53 E60 LCI 530i (i.e. 272ps).
It's used to plug the gap in terms of power output between the 528i & 535i, as the N20 528i has less power than N53 528i. |

Just checked BMW uk, they really offer both 528(4pot+turbo) and 530(3000ccNA) at the same time
The 530 was rated as 268hp vs 241hp for the 528 4 pot. The price difference is a mere £1,800. Who will buy the 528?? |

Someone who wanna do 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds instead of 6.5s in 530. And in some countries, 2.5ltr engine imposed cheaper taxes. |

..Someone who can't appreciate the '6'! Is the n20 528 the same UK price as the n53 528? Quote:
I don't believe the 6.2 for 0-100km .. i believe 6.4 or 6.5 is more accurate, vs the 6.7 (auto) old. The X1 figures are not directly carry-over-able.. |

The 530i only improves by 0.1s over the N52/53 528i, compared to previous iterations on the e60, where the 258->272PS improved 0-100km by 0.2, but may be rounding. The N20 528i is EU unladen weight 1685(1695) vs 1710(1730) (unchanged).. so the N20 equiped is 15-35kg lighter? What is the real figure, ex. equipment differences? Torque is listed at 270nm for both N20 520i and 528i, obviously incorrect.. but what is the tune for the 520i? The old N52/53 was 250/270nm. New 520i is 8.0s vs 8.2/8.5 for the N53b30/N52b25. Price difference between 520i and 528i is equal to 530i and 535i.. is N20 528i price = N53 528i price? |

The trust-funded tree worshipers of Europe and the US will decide which engines live and which ones die.

As much of the Europe is now a Diesel world, how much longer the BMW NAi6 will survive probably depends more on how buyers in the States receive the 4pot 5ers. If the 4 pot doesnt sell as well as planned, I'm pretty sure BMW is well prepared to bring back the NA 530 to the States as the next year model X)

I'll do, especially if N20 is eligible for EFV discount. It has more tuning potential too.
In UK the N53 has higher running cost than the N20 due to higher CO2. Last edited by clarence; 07-20-2011 at 12:48 PM.. |

0-100km can be done with that figure cos it has a lot more torque & also a much wider range than the N52/53. Also for MY12 they've made some small tweaks to the drivetrain so some models such as 535i is now rated to do 0-100 in 5.7s instead of the previous 6.1s. Btw, N52 528i takes 6.8s to do 0-100 due to a narrower torque band. |

EU unladen weight between N20 528 & N53 530 is wht's quoted cos both has the same std equipment spec, so that's the real difference. N20 528i has 350Nm whereas 520i has 270Nm. Power for 520i is 184ps, which matches exactly figs for 200 version of MB's M271Evo. |

Where, on the MY12 535i at 5.7s? Where, for N52 528i? In HK it was given as 6.7s and 8.5s for 528i, 523i .. i have never seen the 6.8 figure.. Quote:
Why the Manual/auto weight difference 10 and 20 kg resp. for N20 528i and N53 530i ? So the N20 is definitely noticeably lighter than the N53, 15-30kg? btw is there any weight diff between N52 and N53? C200 cgi has 270nm also, perfect match. |

It'd be plain stupid for BMW if she doesn't have any fail-safe plan in case the N20 528 dont sell in the States. Mercedes dares not to bring the 1800ccturbo and keep the E350 as the base model there has a lot to say about what they think people in the States want as the entry model in that segment. Remember the W212 still outsell the F10 at this moment and most of them are the E350
