Combox software update for iOS5 and other platforms
The long anticipated software update for the Combox is finally available at www.bmw.com/update
According to BMW it addresses the connectivity and stability issues with the iPhone with iOS 5.x as well as other device. I haven't had a chance to test it myself, so please post your results here. Software update information: click here Last edited by Patrys@BimmerTech; 12-22-2011 at 04:28 AM.. |

Thanks for the notice.
I just updated my 2011 F10, build date 10/10, and it left my MX at 2.5.21, but upgraded my TX from 2.5.21 to 2.6.4. No changes or improvements that I have noticed. I am disappointed to say the least, as I was hoping both Telephone and Multimedia versions would be upgraded to verison 3.5.4. I believe based on my build date, my Combox is P/N 84109244191. I am guessing version MX/TX 3.5.4 is only for the newer Combox versions, P/N 84109251739 or P/N 84109257153.

thanks for the head's up, Patryk, I just updated my car's combox(media).
it went from MX-003.004.031 and TX-003.004.031 to MX-003.005.004 and TX-003.005.004. I haven't played around with 6FL usb audio but I will post if I see any changes. |

No problem. I am glad I could bring you good news although this update will probably be the most useful for the 6NR and Internet/BMW Live features with the iOS5.

It's quick. Maybe 90 seconds or so.

So you got the latest and greatest. What is the build date on your F10?

mine's 10/09. I played around with my USB audio and iphone4 w/ iOS 5, but haven't really found any difference. time it takes to start playing the song from USB when the car starts feels a bit short, but not sure. one thing I noticed tho is that volume from iphone with USB connection seems rather low, I had to really crank it up.

Update to Combox
My October 2010 car was updated from 2.x.x to the latest software 3.x.x at its 18k oil change due to a recall - so it is not Combox specific.
Now has this latest patch applied - with no noticable difference. |

UPD01000.bin was only 28.5k; however, the new UPD01004.bin file is 6.6 mb.

do you have combox telematrics? because there are like 6 parts code for combox telematrics, but only about 2 for media. either telematrics combox is all different for different regions of world, or it saw lot of revisions.

According to Real OEM, there are 4 different versions, each one superseding the previous one. My 10/10 build should have the 2nd version, P/N 84109244191. I have yet to have anyone explain to me the difference, or what upgrading to the latest would get me. Does your 10/09 build have the Combox, as I thought the Combox did not replace the ULF-SBX High and TCU modules until 09/10 Vehicle Production?

In the U.S., you can't get the Combox without BMW Assist. That said, even without the BMW Assist "Service", I believe all Telematics are still though the Combox as it replaced the TCU Module. From the Combox TIS: "Although the Combox is only available in combination with the BMW Assist (option 639), different versions of the control unit are used depending on the vehicle's electrical system and optional equipment. Vehicle electrical system BN2020 (L6[F0x] as of 09/2010) • Combox with telematics (With BMW Assist) • Combox with telematics and GPS receiver (With BMW Assist and Navigation) With the introduction of the Combox the Telematic Control Unit (TCU) is no longer needed nor installed. All BMW vehicle telematics functions are enabled by the Combox with no additional control units required." The fact that yours upgraded from TX-003.004.031 to TX-003.005.004 with the UPD01004.bin flash seems to support that your Telematics too are part of the Combox, even without BMW Assist. Again, what I would like to know though is what exactly determines the TX/MX version you get out of the UPD01004.bin flash, as there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it yet, and what does version TX/MX 3.5.4. include that I am not getting in TX 2.6.4 / MX 2.5.21. Frankly, I can't see any reason for BMW to not put the latest software version on every Combox equipped vehicle, unless the software is somehow not backwards compatible with older hardware (Combox) units. That though doesn't seem to jive with their BMW Combox Launch promotional claim: "Along with the new features and functions that the Combox enables, one of its key advantages is that it will be upgradeable, allowing it to continually be compatible with the latest and greatest devices on the market." If you can't upgrade to the latest Software versions, then it isn't fully upgradeable.

google send map, etc(btw BMW Japan really needs to get their stuff straightened with telecom company and get this working.) since I have nav too, which means combox media has GPS function. Since your combox is first batch of telematics, it might have old parts/components that new combox don't use, which would prevent the new software upgrade from working so they had to resort to minor upgrade. As far as I can tell, I see no difference before/after upgrading software, and unless you have a specific problem right now with assist/bluetooth/combox features I wouldn't worry so much. as the old saying goes, "don't fix what's not broken" |
