Help Please.... What Do U Think ?
Just came back from my local BMW dealership and I am about to make a move and get me a 5 series. Is it worth getting the 550 or is the 535 just as nice. I want some speed so not sure which one to get. Does the sport transmission make much of a difference. I appreciate any feed back.
Thank you so much guys. |

I bought my car straight out, I built both cars, the 550, and the 535, the 535 cost more for per option than the 550 for the same options, the base price may be lower on the 535, but build both cars exactly the same and you will see that the prices aren't that far apart, if gas milage is a factor get the 535...but you lose money with the options. I picked the 550, and dont regret it one bit, if speed is what youre looking for, my 550 is stock, and I've beaten every new vette thats tried to race me, makes me wonder why people do the upgrades, 400 hp and 450 lbs is pretty damn fast on normal streets.

The horsepower numbers are just getting crazy. I've owned five 5ers. My first V8 was a 1999 540 and at the time, I thought its 280 hp was almost too much power. And now I'm getting ready to order a 560 hp M5 (that's 2x the power since '99!). If you drive the 535 and 550 back to back, you'll want the 550. But $200 per month is a lot of money. I'd drive the 535. If you're satisfied, buy it. You'll never miss what you didn't have.

For the OP, I went with the 535 M sport as a 550i was another 10 grand over what I bought. I use the car for commuting so the much better mileage of the 535 also is a plus.

I was about to get the 535i but ended up ordering the 550i after a test drive. It is pretty hard to go back to 535i again. 550i gets the acceleration of the M roadster and practicality of the A4 which is where I am coming from. 535i is quick but not fast. As Jimmy mentioned, the price gap is very small after building both with the same options. For me it's $40-50 difference per month

Are you referring to a used 535i? Even with the now very strong usd currency exchange rate (which is 20% stronger than in 2011), brand new 535 still costed around usd140k, no?

Completely concur that 'some speed' is relative, and that options on the 535 can push the price up to a 550. I drove both quite extensively prior to purchasing. For me, I've wanted a V8 for years and am happy with my 20 mpg even with constant foot-to-the-floor driving on the autobahn.
My advice... buy cheap, buy twice. |

LOL, you sure they were racing you? There's no way in hell you would win that race. The vette wins in almost every type of race...

The 550i is 1/10th of a second faster than the stock corvette in 0-60, and is only 500 lbs lighter, The M-5 also beats the Z06 corvette, many videos on you tube showing it.

Yes the two cars are 10 grand apart, base, but the same options on the 535 cost more that the 550, build the two cars exactly the same and youll notice only a 5,000 difference, not 10,000. They are probably hoping you dont figure that out. I am not sure about it now, but I built my car in June 2011 and thats the way it worked out

According to Edmunds, the 2013 base Corvette's curb weight is 3208 lbs and the 2013 BMW 550i weights 4365 lbs. and according to their road tests, the 2013 Corvette goes from 0-60 in 4.5 sec. and the 2011 550i 0-60 in 5.2 sec.

There are different specs, on different reviews now that I've been looking, I was comparing the 2011 vette and older, not the new one, the 550 has 25 more torque, the 0-60 times are similar within .5 or less on every site Ive found, so with everything that close, it just depends on the driver, yes the vette should win, but in my two experiences it did not. So a big 550i with 4 doors and is a lot heavier than the vette, it runs pretty damn close, even with professional drivers testing the cars out.

My buddy has a 535i and it feels quick and is fun. After driving it I decided to buy one and when I went to the dealer to look at options they had a 550i for me to conveniently see the options and drive......bastards.
If money (gas and $200 payment increase) is a major factor then just do the 535i and you will enjoy. Honestly I drove the 528I and it was nice too. Haven't looked at the MPG but I bet its solid. If you are a "car guy" and occasionally drive aggressively then its a no brainer for me. It killed me to think I had more HP left under the hood due to software limits so I just got Dinan S2. Its stupid but nothing like HP to put a smile on your face. I would only consider trading HP off for handling. Hope that helps |

I'd put my money on a base C6 6 speed in a race over a Dinan 550i. The 550i is a nice car but let's get real. It is no match for a 430hp 3300 lb car. A C6 is a better race for an M5 than it is for a 550i. A base C6 will also accelerate with a CTSV which is only slightly behind an M5 to put it into perspective.
