Need some suggestion over 2013 BMW 535xi vs. 2013 AUDI S5
Guys,
I really am stucked here. I am thinking to get either one of this. I really like both cars. I know they are not in the same category but I really am not sure why I ended up with these two cars as well.. Anyways, I am wondering if any of you guys, bimmer fans, can help me why I should choose the 5 series over the S5 or vice versa? I am going load my 5 series up to $75,845 (I will not take the Dynamic Handling Package only because it seems that its job is only going to smoothen the ride, which i don't really care). On the other hand, with the audi S5 prestige, I am also going to load it up with every options as well. Really, I love both cars. I like how fast the audi S5 is and I also love the interior of the 535xi that will have the super beautiful Bang&Olufsen sound system. Any thought guys? |

If your going to load up a 535, why not go up to a 550? I was looking at a 535 at one point, but once I build it up to the level that I wanted, it was only about $4K less than the 550 with the same options. Also, gas milage be damned if your going to spend $75 on a car. The yearly increase in fuel costs will only be $400 more than the 535 (according to fueleconomy.gov).

I agree. If your 535 is going to cost 75K you are better off going with a 550xi and not go with the bang olufsen system. I got the regular premium audio upgrade and its plenty good enough already.
My 535xi came out to just about 72K and i regret not going with the bigger motor now. That said you can not seem to pick two completely opposite cars to decide on. Ask you self these questions Do you need the room? The S5 is at best a two seater. The rear seats are a joke unless its a midget sitting back there. Are you after performance handling or ride comfort? The 535xi is luxury sedan first and sports sedan second. It does not handle nearly as well as a 3 series or the S5 but in terms of ride comfort it can't be beat. Personally I would be going for a M3 coupe over a S5 if i wanted a sports car. Alan

weird choice b/t cars (as you already stated), but i would get a coupe if you can get a coupe (i.e. don't need 4 doors and the additional capacity).

S5 is not in the same category as 535xi.
If you don't need 4 doors, get a coupe. The M3 coupe, or upcoming M4, are what you should be looking at. S5 is beautiful, but it doesn't compare in performance/handling to the M3 and likely the gap will widen even more when M4 comes out. I'd suggest waiting a bit and getting into the new M4. |

WOW !! Thank you guys for your suggestions. I will re-think again and try to build the 550 without the B&O.. But I just cant resist how the B&O looks on the car.. LOL.. I should think about this carefully since seems most of you guys agree of taking out the B&O and go for 550..

Funny, I actually have a 535xi and and my wife has an S5. Both loaded up just like you stated and her choice came down to an M3 vs S5. She chose the S5 primarily due to appearance. I personally would not like the S5 for a daily driver. Suspension is rough and the car is quite loud. Back seats are a bit of a joke. As mentioned, they aren't really comparable so it comes down to what you need out of the car. I'm on my 3rd 5 series. I had 540's before and I can tell you that I have no regrets going with a 6 cylinder.
Any specific questions? |

My last car was S4, as much I like the brand I was just plain bored with the design when I test drove A6, TTS and Q5. I basically just wanted to get something completely different and refreshing. Not another dash that will look almost the same just a bit bigger, not another set of knobs and buttons that look and feel the same and so I went with the 5 series. If I were you (provided that you’re keeping your current ride) I would get an Audi, just for a heck of experiencing something completely new. Who knows maybe you end up liking Audi better (and get S6 next time) or maybe it will just help you appreciate BMW even more. After all how many cars/brands do we get to experience before it’s our time to expire…. Good Luck !

At $75K do yourself a favor and also look at the RS5. If you think the S5 looks gorgeous than the RS5 will have you go nuts. The RS5 is also very exclusive and drives amazing.

Thanks. Are you going to keep your X6M? How do you like it btw?

This statement was very true back in the 80’s. Today, it’s just an unsubstantiated line. With the current lineup there is noting that BMW delivers better than Audi (and vice versa). It’s just a matter of personal preference, loyalty to the brand, finally being able to show off with the BMW tag (still true for many), etc…
Some prefer Wagner over Strauss or XMas over Thanksgiving; doesn’t mean that one is better than the other.
