Went to install my BMS intake and saw this valve n extra filter. This is new to me since my "11" X5 N55 didn't have this.

BMS emails me back with this...
"I don't remember what its used for but it just remains there." No SHT A$$HOLE... No, I should just rip it out and and say Efffff it. This valve seems important due to it having double filters for it, intake filter & additional white fish tank filter.

So being curious I went in deeper. This valve is spring loaded and seems like some kind of purge air release or opens up when air is being sucked in under wide open throttle. I'm able to push it open from under the box, no lines are connect to it

Picked up my wife's 535i (she needs to drive more to keep the battery charged!) today and asked a tech about the valve. He postulated that it is a valve to protect the engine if the air filter gets clogged. It will bypass the filter letting in "dirty" air which isn't great bit will protect the engine. He said it was very similar to the bypass valve in an oil filter. He said BMW designed many systems to protect the engine.

Never mind, tech is correct, I see the shroud wall high enough where it partitions valve area. |

So I changed the engine filter on my 2014 535i xdrive but my airbox doesn’t have that valve. Does anyone know what determines if a car has it and why is it necessary?
Mine looks like this |
