I've also installed the m performance exhaust on my 2013 535xi and noticed it drones in comfort mode around 1500-2000 rpm. Especially going up hill. As for the 2 different part numbers from the exhaust I read on other forms they slightly changed the muffler pipes to accommodate the new 80 mm chrome and carbon fiber tips. I have the 362 part number and noticed drone too. I might take the exhaust off and take them to the dealer and have them install it. Then after a weeks says it drones and they might fix it by doing some sort of software or tune to the ecu to eliminate the drone or order new exhaust.

Nope - it still does. I take it off for the winter and reinstall in the summer. I was using good quality but non-BMW clamps originally. I switched to BMW clamps this year because of heavy corrosion. This summer the drone is slightly less (let's call it noticeably less?) but still there and far more present than I had on my Dinan-equipped E39 years ago.
I do also have new software (factory, but updated to latest), but wouldn't expect that to influence drone. I think I figured out why my shifts sounded a little different with the new software - I found that even WOT in D it stays on the middle shift program and only does the most aggressive shift program in DS. On the old software I think WOT or near-WOT in D still did the fastest shifts. The middle program in D sounds "weird" to me in those conditions. I quite often hear the fast shift program if shifting manually, by comparison. |

Can you please share you experience in more detail. Did you install it yourself or at the BMW dealer. If find that after breaking in the exhaust for 200 km the drone does sound a little quieter. However, now it seems the entire exhaust is also quieter and seems to blip less often and aggressively during upshifts in sport manual/auto. I'm just curious, has anyone washed their exhausts and noticed its a little quieter? Ever since I washed mines with soap and water, it seems to far less quieter and less aggressive in sound then I first had it on.

Yeah you're probably right, they aren't going to do anything. I hate how you bought it from the same dealer and want to get it inspected for warranty purposes they charge close to $200 CAD to just take a look at it. Seems like a rip off.

Was choosing between two 535xi CPOs and discovered upon the test drive that one of them had quite annoying sound between 1700-2300 rpm, especially on the uphills, so just like the other people describe here - low frequency pressing noise, qualifying as drone, which goes away if use sport mode. I was choosing between nearly two identical stocks and was trying to make my mind about which i want to buy. I draw attention of the sales and they asked techs "wth with this noise". the other car was dead quiet.
this is when it was "discovered" one car of the two had MPE (I said discovered - the both cars just came back from the lease and haven't been even looked at to be certified as CPOs). Techs said the noise came from the disconnected muffler, likely done by the previous owner to increased the loudness. They "supposedly" reconnected the muffler. I couldn't say with 100% certainty i heard the difference, but maybe because test drives were done 3 days apart. long story short: the low frequency drone on a highway at 65-75 mph is quite annoying, so i keep the car in Dsport pretty much all the time. It is not a big deal in street driving as i love sport mode; on the highway though i am getting probably some -3 mpg... to bad the drone is getting away above 2700 rpm, which is too high for 8th gear and stupid US speed limits, especially on East coast... still considering to bring it over to the dealership to check the "connection of the muffler" as the car is CPO'ed still... donno the part number but my tips are black, so i guess.. newer part number.

If i do a soft-lady driving, the change of the gears in comfort mode takes place between 1.8-2k rpm, and therefore the drone is pretty much always there until 90 mph. In the sport mode I can't complain at all cause the shifting takes place between 2.2-3k rpm or higher and the rpms are never below 2k no matter how soft I am driving... I feel you're right about the mufflers but I can't comment on that as I have no idea what they had done or pretended to.

No droning, the perfect amount of sound, makes the motor feel much less restricted. |

Anyone on Long Island? Will try to schedule a tech-ride appointment with a dealer anyway!

I love the MPE. I've since added a catless DP so it's a bit loud but sounds unreal under WOT. The upshift gurgle is perfect.
Drive in Sport mode and there won't be any drone. My fiancee takes the car sometimes and shes never complained about the noise. She just loves how fast it is compared to her truck. Also, if you didn't know, Akrapovic makes the MPE Great company

It's not too bad... if you or a friend can do it, it takes about an hour. No emissions in Hawaii

I know I'm late to this post but I currently have the MPE installed on my F10 535i if you still need a reference. I'm located in West Cary.

Bumping an old thread... has anyone figured out, besides the tips, if there are any technical differences between discontinued 18-302-293-447 vs. 18-302-354-362?
Found a deal on the discontinued 18-302-293-447 but am worried about drone... Appreciate the feedback! |
