$900 trans fluid change?
My local BMW shop (No Dealer) quoted this price for just a trans fluid change....Was he thinking a full flush?...LMK what you have paid if you own a 2013 528i. P.S....I know the pan gets replaced as it is the filter, Thanks!

I think that's a little high. Parts will run about $230. Most shop would charge 1-2 hour for labor even though it takes about 30 mins to do. I would say about 400-500 is reasonable for parts and labor. My local mechanic only charge me $50 for labor but that's because I know them.

Independent shop first quoted me $150. I was down.. and then when I got there they said like $300-$400. Figured out how to do it myself. Helps to have a fast pump which you can make yourself for $20

Good for you. I did mine for the first time a month or so ago using info I gathered here.
I 2nd the recommendation to make your own filling pump. A $15 garden sprayer, $2 ball valve (1/4"), and some tubing is all it takes. With the money I saved by doing it myself, I purchased a Foxwell scan tool to read the trans temperature... win/win! |

I was surprised at how long the trans temp took to get really hot. I thought would have to rush to get the new fluid in, but really could have taken your time

Same set up on the E39 540i - final level check with engine running and transmission in a critical temperature range. The temperature was skyrocketing and I was scrambling to get it done. Then I do my F10 535 and I had to lie under the car and wait... |

I actually went around the block from a cold start so the fluid was through as many gears/channels as possible. Then I drove up on boards to do the final level. Still had some time and it was summer.

Wrench setting
The trans cover needs to be tightened down at 10 Nm for each bolt. Cranked it up to the 10 mark, seems like a lot. Have I got it set right?...Don't want to over tighten.....

The trans fluid and filter kit is $160 on FCP euro. When I did the trans fluid and filter on my E90 I paid over $300 for the kit. Parts prices for this car are coming down.

Trans fluid Change
It would be an easy job, BUT rolling around under the car up on jacks was not fun. I lifted it as hi as my jacks would go, it really calls for a rack at a shop. There is very little room to work. If your going to do this same job, put extra jacks (and I put a extra floor jack) under the car incase it should come down....REAL dangerous when lifting the entire car off the ground to get it level to change the trans fluid. Will I do it again in the future even with all the money I saved....No.

Hi Guys,
While running the car and getting that temperature of the transmission oil at between 40C and 50C to do the final fill, do you go through each gear with the traction control off? I assume you're in Comfort Mode or does that even matter? I have a 2016 535xi M-Sport and it's at 44 000km. I am thinking of changing the transmission oil at around 80 000km or should I change it earlier like at 50 000km? Thanks in advance. |
