Thats great until you get into real details. 5-60 is laughable along w/ 0-100, 0-130 etc. Can't wait to destroy one. LOL

18.4 secs to 130 mph means it a slug on the top end Stg2 F8x e30 will trap around 129 in the quarter mile Even with bad traction it took me around 11.9 on street tires and the trap was 127 That is an eternity longer for that golf to get to 130 In the real world at 75 mph it would get destroyed So that statement is true |

And did you just compare a stage 2 car to a stock one? A stage 2 Mk7 Golf R 1/4 mile is around 11.5s but only traps in the low teens, they're in the low 13s range for 0-130. Of course a modified S55 is going to be quicker. The Mk8 will be a little faster than the Mk7, the new Conti turbo is better than the old IS38, but it's still not going to be approaching an S55 or S58 unless it's running over 30psi. |

I had a Mk5 GTI for a few years, it was a great little car (mine was an 09, so it had the TSI found in the later generations). Wouldn't mind picking up a Mk6/7 at some point, as from what I've heard the interiors were much improved over the Mk5. I'd probably go for an R though, because traction in 1st and 2nd can be an issue in the GTI lol. I'm sure the Mk8 is even more comfortable and quiet, but the little details especially inside seem to be a massive swing-and-a-miss. Also the styling is just sooooo bland...the Mk8 R looks like what the Mk8 GTI should have looked like. Still, it might be the last German hot hatch we get with a manual, as I believe Europe is DSG-only for almost every VW performance vehicle now.

The first six minutes are hilarious. All hail Mk7. None of this; the MMI, the capacitive buttons and non-buttons, the hood prop instead of a strut, El Cheapo interior, etc.; none of it would've been green-lit if Piech were still alive, I'm sure. VAG has done some very questionable things in the past, but all of this crap, packaged into their number one car, is the opposite of what I know VW for.

And BMW is copying many of these errors with iDrive 8 unfortunately.

Farah's review above his tragically hilarious but spot-on.
I love my '19 Mk7.5 R. Fantastic daily and complement to my M2c. The Mk8? Zero interest.

I finally got to sit in a Lapiz Blue R w/ DSG yesterday. It was fucking special. My next car for sure. Within five minutes, I was able to customize the home screens, the shortcuts, and the equalizer to my liking. Everything's customizable. You can fully disable all traction systems in less time than it would take to hold down a traditional button (which is typically around 5+ secs on most cars). The MK7 is great, but it's also the most generic car in the world. Definitely for guys that wouldn't dare go beyond missionary in the bedroom. At least the MK8 is the first car since the MK5 to take some semblance of risk in interior and exterior design. My next car for sure. Just waiting and calling dealers that aren't trying to blast my cornhole with markups.

Time notwithstanding, you've got to take your eyes off the road more when using any kind of touch screen than, say, physical buttons which you can memorise very easily. Like blindly typing text messages on a Nokia 3210. Customisable yes, it is, does it help your overall interaction with the vehicle, I don't think so. But this is not a VW-only problem anyway. MMI aside, though, the fact that, 1. the fucking HVAC controls aren't back-lit, 2. I kept turning the steering wheel hearing on with my right hand, 3. there is an apparent cost-cutting mayhem in VW interiors, is enough for me to scratch my head and wonder where this all is going to end up one day. It does drive great apparently (have driven a regular Golf) and I like the way it looks in GTI/R trim. You won't be disappointed. I wouldn't go ti the length of saying that Mk7 was bland. A Golf shall be "boring" to an extent, and shall not have any stupid mishaps on the inside.

Also, there's this thing that people keep talking about rampant cost cutting. Some reviewers make general complaints, others say they don't see what everyone's talking about. This happens every generation, especially when nobody's actually had any time in the freaking cars lol. MK6 owners regarding MK7s. MK7s regarding MK7.5s. And MK7.5s regarding MK8s... Until they get in one and realize it's not egregious; maybe some trade-offs here and there. Plenty of MK7-7.5 owners aren't noticing any huge difference in material quality with the 8 (see the guys on Throttle House, for instance). I had a go at the materials and didn't find a problem. It's also built like a tank vault everywhere you press and squeeze. In isolation, the most common points actually worth mentioning are: -Hood struts replaced with prop rods -Back seat upper door cards are molded plastic -A pillar material is slightly harder But nobody mentions the additional standard features (LED lights, HUD, heat/cool seats, assists, etc.), the higher grade leather (objectively, categorically higher quality by label), or the improved running gear when viewing the entire car as a whole. Otherwise, it's people mistaking the fake satin bling in the MK7 for higher quality materials, when the MK8 goes for a matte finish across the board. Hell, MK6 owners complained about the lack of felt lining in the glovebox on newer models. Like, big deal guys. I think the non-backlit sliders are the biggest, most valid complaint. And the lack of a dedicated fan speed guide. Otherwise, the buttons are fiiiine. The UI is fiiine. The car is great. I loved my time in it and can't wait for dealers to stop being pigs with their pricetags. I use CarPlay for everything and don't seem to have an issue multitasking with touchscreens, so I'm not concerned about the distraction. Maybe for people that don't use CarPlay/AA or have never used a touchscreen will crash and have accidents left and right. They should probably avoid this car to save everyone the risk.

No HomeLink without an optional mirror is another goofy packaging choice.
Many people miss the main issues around moving buttons (that had proper placement and ergonomic design) into a touch screen. The most important issue is situational awareness. The Germans popularized the MMI / iDrive controller (for example) because they understood the science behind allowing for the operation of the system without taking your eyes off the road. Bean Counters now make the Engineering Decisions. People then defend this without understanding the science.
