Diesel engines are expensive to repair, but the mileage they can drive without repairs is much greater than the life of a gasoline engine, with proper maintenance. Exceptions are engines with DEF (Adblue) all new engines are already with this system, i hate it. In the diesel you may have a problem with the soot filter, if the car is driving on the highway you will not have problems, it is cleaned on the go, for the city diesel is good when it is new or 4-5 yrs old..

We had 2011 550I which had the BIG recall done twice. Both soft close doors died 3 months apart which was $800 each. Local indy said 90-100K was the time to sell it.
After 1985 535I went 230K and 525I went 150K it appears 100K+ BMWs are rare. She loves her X3 30 M Sport now.

Now at almost 125,000 miles and only a part of the lower left seat plastic is coming off. Part is on its way on a slow boat from somewhere and isn't too expensive. Otherwise its a proper executive car for me. Diesel is more expensive but still less $$ than running a similar 535i on premium.

164k miles on my 520d. Still going strong. VCG leaking a bit but it will be done in the summer since I'm gonna do the timing chain with all new parts.
Already changed vibration damper as it was in pretty bad shape. |

2012 528xi, 180,000 miles. engine / drive train work i have had to do out of extended warranty is the valve cover and guibo. additionally the front half shafts, control arms, and tie rods and the fact the car is 10 years old, spending $7000 more on a car beats depreciation any day. there's been another $2000 spent on various things but I'm not surprised. or i could have bought a new car and lost 20k out the door

117,000 mainly motorway miles. No issues other than fumes entering cabin from EGR cooler (replaced by BMW in 2019 - now another identical recall).
I renewed the transmission and final drive fluids at 100k and the serpentine belt and associated pulleys at 115k (they looked perfect). I've needed 2 springs at the rear due to our appalling roads. Otherwise no issues. I do all my own servicing and minor repairs so this has been one of the least troublesome cars I've had.

145k on my '14 535i. Mostly highway miles from cross-coutry/region trips. No leaks (aside from the washer fluid reservoir I need to get checked out.) Runs like a champ, gets great highway mileage. The guy I bought it from picked it up after a 2-year lease and was meticulous in his maintenance. He had just done the 120k service when I bought it at 119k miles. Every now and then (once every 4-ish months?) I get a PO440 code that I just reset. May need to get the thrust arms checked out, though. Sometimes it makes a strange sound when turning the wheel at low speeds. But it's paid for and if I don't spend more than a few hundred to $1,000/yr on maintaining it, then it's still a tremendous value for me to keep. With the Blizzaks I've got even winters here in CO don't phase it at all. (It's not X-drive.) I like the LCI F10 more than the newer ones, and I'll eventually look to replace mine with another F10 535i. Maybe a '16 M-Sport with low miles.

99k...and costing me a good chunk of $$
Having a hard time processing and feeling good about my situation...
'14 535xd (in the US). Picked it up with ≈ 60k end of 2019. No issues beyond the occasional diesel hiccup (that BMW covered). At 90k, decided I wanted to do some preventative work and have the transmission serviced. At the same time, vehicle developed an OFHG leak. Included fuel filter in a pretty good service visit (at an independent shop) and hoped I'd be good for some time. Rear spring broke this fall, so replaced everything on both sides. Again, had an independent shop do the work. Particulate sensor failure caused a check-engine. Dealer covered that and EGR cooler recall and advised that the guibo showed age and I had a very mild valve cover leak. So back to an independent shop for affirmation and committed to them doing that work. They also recommended front/rear differentials be flushed, brake flush was due, and found thrust bushings to be worn. Given the mileage, they recommended I do glow plugs and control module. I also had an odd, intermittent IHKA/RDC issue that they tried to diagnose. A number of faults were present, but nothing definitive. They advised that I replace the RDC module as that's something that they see fail. While replacing the valve cover, one of the injectors was stuck, so that needs to be broken out and replaced. All told, I'm over $6k in this service and about $10k for the year. I want to think that this is a hell of a refresh and I'll be good for a number of years, but I'm not convinced that this hemorrhaging is done. Unfortunately, all the vehicles that appeal to me have comparable reliability predictions (e.g. Panamera). I DID look at some Lexus sport sedans, but I really don't like the aesthetics as much as BMWs... A year ago I would have estimated the car's value to be $12-$15k...but not "replaceable" at that price-point. I'll be $10k into it in this calendar-year...what will the value be when I pick it up from this service? Going from 90k to 100k has been expensive. I'm not sure whether I reap the benefits of a thorough and expert update or divest into something different... |

Just picked it up...
Drove it back from the independent shop (≈ 2 hours away).
Vehicle feels fantastic....I hope that it doesn't continue to need this sort of annual refresh/$$, but the drive and power (with the diesel drivetrain) feels impossible to replace (36.6 MPG for the last 4k miles on this oil change...). |

2014 535d. 170k
So I also have recently dropped a good bit of change into mine. I used to drive a lot for work. Bought the rig with 90k miles, changed the brakes and had new CV boots installed. Like zero issues until now. BMW just came out with official EGR replacement but have replaced this once already due to cracked outside coolant pipe, not the internal as claimed to fail. So now 80K more miles I needed a water pump. This led me to proactively change the turbo as I had oil in the charge cooler and intake build up. This led to all new pullies, belt, and tensioner, valve cover gasket (small leak), new axles as CV boots gone again. and the guiebo. Lasted 1 day.... something is heating up serpentine belt x2 killing them. Come to find harmonic balancer pully is bad, NOW I think I have the dreaded timing chain failure. Can't exclude last shop was rough getting balancer off? Could they have killed a tensioner jamming on the HB pully? LOVE the car otherwise. Has been an awesome runner. Especially if you drive a distance everyday. 37+mpg @70+ mph. Guessing i'll be putting the $ into fixing timing chain.
