From my understanding the N57 is more fuel efficient that the M57. So if the 535d is a M57 how could it get the same MPG as the 530d N57? Very strange. Hopefully a knowledgeable Euro member can shed some more light on this. I'm holding out for one of these engines in a X3 for the USA, |

BMW will have to bring a range of diesels to NA in order to meet the 2016 milage legislation. |

they dont mention 'twin turbo' anywhere in the UK or German catalogue (but they do for the 550i) so it's probably a twin scroll. Last edited by highfive; 03-24-2011 at 02:11 AM.. |

I have to agree. I wasnt sure what I was getting myself into at first. I had an Audi A5 3 litre TDI Quattro before changing for the 2011 535D saloon M Sport. But I can honestly say that the engine so far has been absolutely pefect. Lots of power and Im getting an average 34 mpg. The car just has no fault as far as I can see. Well maybe the compñlicated Rear Seat Entertainment could be easier to use........ But mechanically, I have never driven such a sound and fun car.

The 335d must not be selling well if there are so many loaners.
Maybe that's why they won't bring the 535d to the states- everyone says they want one, nobody buys it. By the way, did anyone notice that diesel is 15 to 30 cents higher than premium- at least here in NY/NJ. |

In the winter...at least in the Northeast....the price of diesel is 15 cents (or so) higher than premium largely,I've read, because you're competeing with those who have oil heat (many homes in the Northeast have oil heat) for your fuel.As you may or may not know home heating oil and diesel fuel are all but identical. The rest of the year diesel is within a couple of pennies of Premium.

Don't confuse the US 335d with the European version!
The diesels sold in Europe aren't a direct correlation to the US versions. On the GT series for the rest of the world, for example, they have the 530d and the 535d. The engine in the 530d is closer to the US 335d at about 265hp, while the 535d is (as indicated in the article) the 299hp version.
In either case, I agree, I would very much have preferred purchasing a diesel version of my new car (to be picked up in Munich late April) verses the gasoline engined version, but, BMWUSA told me there was a chance it might show in the mid-cycle update due late 2012, and it might not...I just couldn't wait longer, as I'd already put it off over a year. |

If it makes any difference to BMW, I would also totally buy an F10 535d. But... somehow, 535d is not sold in the U.S., while the 335d is

It wasn't until the 2011 Super Bowl commercial that BMW got serious about marketing their diesel technology for the USA. It seems to me that offering the 335d as a loaner is a great way to market the car. What is your point about diesel prices being higher than premium? |

No manual available as the engine won't pass the emission regs and is supposed to be more economical in auto too. All I know is it goes like the wind for a 2-tonne wagon with a top speed approaching 150mph - Yipe!! |

The only thing you're mistaken about is the reason for the setup you described, which is correct. The reason to do it is to improve turbo spool time / response.
