"Not even close in any respect"? The new 3.0TFSi hit 60 in 5.5 seconds as a result of a better unit and less weight. You havent even driven it yet so what would you know. Seems like an ok competitor to the 535i to me. Quote:

I think the new BMW trend for a plain front bumper is ok because it's just stock models. No doubt the facelift will improve it anyway. In pictures I do see what you mean but honestly the new 5 series looks really good on the road.

I was only responding to his inquiry of the Audi V8 variant being a competitor to the 550, which I feel comfortable saying prior to its debut that it would be not. Audi in other respects can place some of their models against other BMW models, as in the case you pointed out of the 3.0 TFSi vs 535.

Sorry, but aside the personal tastes on design, buying a BMW means buying technology. I would never buy an Audi and drive the same engine you could find on board Skodas, Seats and VWs!

Yes, but the M5 will smoke it.

So will the 550 and give the M5 a good run for its money and in many cases depending on the driver smoke it. The 550 is a tremendous beast, try it out sometime.

I think the RS6 is more likely a competitor for the M5. The MTM tuned ones with 730hp are doing some damage. Have a look on GTBoard. I prefer BMW all the way, but wil give respect where its due

I'm looking to buy a new car too and will be test driving both the BMW 5 (535i) and A6 (3.0 TFSI) as I like them both. I will post a seperate thread with my personal findings in a few weeks or whenever I can arrange the test drives.
These findings will be entirely personal. Having said that, the following comparisons would make complete sense: BMW 535i vs A6 3.0TFSI BMW 550i vs S6 BMW M5 vs RS6 I do not think there's a sane person that could possibly disagree with this. |

Wot no diesel?
Both BMW and Audi do cracking diesels, as we all know... Also be sure to try M Sport with AND without VDC/AS and so on. There is very good discussion thread on this issue here. Many people who hadn't done this (including myself) regret not doing this prior to ordering. Me personally have the M Sport without any of the active chassis enhancements but am happy with the M Sport suspension. But "one will never miss what one never had". |

Read a review of the A6 2.0TDi in this month's issue of Car magazine (UK). While they liked it, they wished that the substantial weight savings had carried over into the vehicle dynamics, which they said were a bit stoic. Much better than before, but they noted that (paraphrasing) "while the base versions of the E Class and 5 series won't get you out of bed on a Sunday morning either, the 5 series still has the dynamic advantage".
It should be interesting to see how they review the A6 3.0T, although likely the group test will be 535d vs. A6 3.0TDi vs. E320 Bluetec. |

No no more diesel, I'm only doing about 18 000 kms a year. But I haven't test driven any 3 liter petrol engines yet, so if they're not what I want I will go back to diesel. Thanks for the tip on the active enhancement stuff, much appreciated.
I've got an Audi A5 right now (please don't shoot me) so it would make sense to check out the A6, but I really like the BMW too. I never used to like bmw interior, but they've done a stunning job with the F10 and the 5 with M sports package looks the business. I've been reading lots of reviews and comparisons and they do not all say the same thing. The comparison in Auto Motor und Sport (German mag) actually favours the handling of the A6 over the bmw 5 (!). Don't get me wrong, when I read that I found that very hard to believe but I guess it means I'll need to test drive them both and see which one I prefer. All of these reviews are at the end of the day subjective, it is very hard to write an objective review when you are detailing your personal experience with a car. |

Regarding handling, on the basis that those German mags are correct (until proven wrong), even if subjective, I won't be too surprised if the F10 tested was a standard SE without those active suspension/steering enhancements. |

Yes they took the standard versions, the only thing that could influence handling for the bmw was the adaptive drive which was included, just like the optional air suspension was included for the A6 => they don't mention anything else, so no idea really. I'll be testing both cars, hopefully that will make things clear for me.

I have just ordered a f11 for delivery in two weeks. I was initially surprised by the AMS comparison test where the F10 finished last after both Audi A6 and the E-series. F10 lagged significant behind the A6 in all the typical strong disciplins of a 5-series. The explanation is very simple: Weight.
Whereas the A6 has lost approx 100kg the F10 has gained about 100kg. Bearing in mind that the previous A6 already had a weight advantage. In a world where every car manufacture tries to loose weight goes BMW in the opposite direction. What were they thinking? Braking, agility, road handling, fuel economy etc is hurting when a car gains weight and the AMS test shows just this. Elementary. Last edited by bmwf11; 03-29-2011 at 02:26 PM.. |

AMS compared a couple of 4x4 cars.
The standard Audi FWD would not have been in the same class with a standard RWD BMW. Or the RWD MB for that mather. To compare an AWD Audi to a RWD BMW (prox. the same weight, Audi 5 kgs heavier), that would be interesting.... And keep in mind AMS and VAG, it sometimes looks like a mariage.... |

Love the deep shoulder line on the F10--and also the elegant roof line with the Hofmeister kink. From the side, the A6 just looks flat--and dated--by comparison.
