Thanks for posting the detailed instructions. I just put M5 grilles (chrome surrounds, gloss black slats) on my Carbon Black F10. Man is my arm sore from being squeezed in that space behind the bumper. First one wasn't so bad, but the second was more stubborn. Took a break for an hour went back and it was a little easier. All ended well.
First pic is half-and-half, left is stock chrome, right is black M5. |

I would like to join the this-was-not-so-easy club but I got it done and it was worth the scraped up forearms and bloody knuckles.
I did not have the courage to use the pulling method and instead did it the original way that ended in 3 hours, loads of cursing, and complete satisfaction. I bought my OEM all black M performance grills from ECS Tuning and swapped the all black slats with the chrome/black stock slats. Now that I have the experience, I could do the job in about 30 minutes using LACSTER's original method that accesses the grills through the engine compartment. I still would not have the courage to use the pulling method. I hope to never have to do it again as it was a huge PITA. Big thanks to LACSTER for his write up and all of the people in the later threads who said it was NOT easy. Your frustration helped me persevere and finish the job. some broken tabs!
hmm, i would say you need a lot of patience for this mod, once all 6 screws are out the bumper can be pulled forward a bit and you can reach the top and side tabs, like the OP said. That being said if you are doing this in the winter like I am .. you might break a couple of tabs on the old grills, if you are replacing them no worries but if you want to re-use them be careful. I replaced mine with OEM grills from BMW and they snap back in really nicely. and looks sharp! Midnight blue with black grills.. will post a photo soon.

I agree why remove the rubber and the screws? They are far from the grill itself i can't see them securing it at that distance??? I am going remove the grill today to install my RPI scoops (F10 M5), i will try with our removing the screws first.

Quick question...
Will the pre-LCI M5 grills fit a 528 non m-sport? I just found out they may not.. I like the look of the black slats and chrome bezel on my jet black F10. EDIT: JUST SAW MNESS DID EXACTLY THIS TO HIS 535 M-SPORT. WILL THIS WORK ON A 528 non-m? |

I just installed the M5 grills. Love the look now. All I did was grip both sides of the grill firmly, and gave a very solid tug. Pop, and done! Removed and installed both in about 1 minute. I didn't really care if the old ones cracked so I decided to try the tug method first. The grills are pretty sturdy and didnt break nothing using this method.

So after reading through this entire thread, I decided to do the grill swap on my 2014. I opted to try the straight forward removal, without involving the screws and rubber piece. Left my car parked in the sun all morning. Then I taped up the grill opening to protect it, in case of any mishap. I'm glad I did this because while removing the first grill, I snapped back and hit just above the opening.
I sat down in front of the car to try this. I didn't want to kneel down or squat (catcher style) thinking I may fall back on my gluteous. I grasped the grill and pulled it straight out firmly. It came right out. So I figured I got lucky and the other side was going to be a PITA, but no. It came out just as easily. Total time to complete the swap, maybe 10 minutes if that. Here's how I grabbed the grill to pull straight out. Demonstrating on one that's already out. Original factory grill had a rubber seal. New grill, which is also OEM, does not have it.

^^ I've done it both ways and pulling it straight out while the engine is warm is the easiest way. I did it after arriving to the mall with the wife and kid right in the parking lot. Took less than minute pulling them off and swapping over to the new one.

That is actually scary when you think about it. You spend money and get a nice set of grilles and they can be gone in 1 minute!

After polishing my F10 2012 yesterday I realized that the silver plastic strips somehow looks worn out compared to the shining car It seems to be really cheap to buy it and replace it myself.
Are there any better ones that the original silver? They are cheap and look cheap too. Secondly, the thread talks about pulling the kidney grill with power. Does this apply for the black plastic grill too? Are there chances of breaking the clips or damaging the bumper paint? I have a non-M bumper. Thanks a lot in advance for your answers. |
