Replacement Start Stop button
I normally don't ask for opinions because I usually do what I like, but here I am starting an opinion thread.
My Start Stop button has gotten pretty worn so I was going to replace it with this: but as I was scrolling through I saw this: I've always like the S2000 red start button but thought this would look out of place in an F10. Then later I went back and thought it looked kind of good. The next day I was again thinking it might be too much. So I want to get opinions? Too much? Neat sporty touch? agree! a darker red with some carbon fiber would look sweet! that bright red would just stick out like a sore thumb to me at least

No...you should've ordered a bunch, then flip them for a small profit to fellow forum members not willing to wait a few weeks for them.

Do you finally get one? I wonder if these buttons fit both switches with and without auto start/stop function (pre/post 2011 model year)

There are either special cutouts in one design and extra tabs in the other that would prevent proper fitment for two different applications. |

I haven't yet. Just bought tires and brakes so I'll probably wait until after the holidays. If you look at the links there are different buttons for cars with and without auto start/stop.

Look at the 11 second mark of this video. It seems like you just have to take off the wood trim and the button is attached to that. |

I'd take it a step further and put customer text on it. Alot of folks have all the same mods on their car...make yours a little different. When I built my Z, I had some custom fender emblems made. OEM looking as possible. Stock ones just said 'Z'. Ones I had made moved the Z up a bit and put Twin Turbo under it. Wouldn't be hard to do something on a start button.
I had to do a run of 10 pair to make it cheap enough. Otherwise one set would have been $600.

I just installed this...
The black START STOP ENGINE button on my 2013 128i was getting raggedy, so I ordered a replacement. They come in several colors, but I like the black.
I replaced it today and I was surprised how easy it was - with a couple of the right tools. Using a firm trim remover tool that has a rounded triangular tip, I slipped it beneath the bezel of the switch and pried it gently away from the dash. It came out about 1/8". I moved the tool to the opposite side of the bezel, slipped it in, and out the entire switch popped out of the dash. I wiggled the connector loose and brought the entire assembly inside. With a spunger tool, those little plastic things we use to disassemble computer keyboards and such, I removed the steely-looking bezel from the switch assembly. This was done by turning the assembly bottom-up and gently prying each of the four tabs of the bezel away from the switch. It only takes 1 mm or so of displacement for them to disengage. Be gentle. Without the bezel attached, it's easy to see the four tabs of the button which also need to be gently nudged from their posts. That done, the button will pop off, bounce off the floor and land beneath your table or desk. Reassembly is like putting together playschool toys. Snap the new button gently into the switch, paying attention to the location of the alignment tab. The bezel snaps easily back onto the switch, also with an alignment tab. Wiggle the connector back onto the switch, orient the switch in the hole in the dash- with the words reading right-side up, and press it into the hole. It took me twice as long to type this up as it did to do it. Good luck, kids. |
