MHD stage 1 on a stock 535i - Impressions
Finally got around to installing MHD stage 1 on my (completely stock) 2013 535i 6MT. The process went smoothly with the Bimmergeeks pro cable and a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge - taking less than half an hr. I used an old 15 amp battery charger to keep the voltage up. The instructions were simple and the google play account worked fine for the purchase of the software although my credit card company did send me a text about possible fraud - a simple text reply was all that was required. There are three components to the MHD flashing - the base software itself, the monitoring portion, and the map pack. I purchased the stage 1 map pack - all three totaling around $450. I left the defaults for the burble enabled, didn't select the "cold start" option, and flashed the 93 map. The lights flash, several errors on the dash light up. All of that settles down during the later parts of the flash.
After flashing, the first startup was flawless. I've got 30k on the car and the plugs could stand to be changed. Driving impressions: Bear in mind this is on a 6mt, but the flash totally transforms the car from a sleepy heavy feeling car to one that is light feeling. For me the throttle mapping is just perfect. On comfort mode, the throttle is linear, and still very easy to drive smoothly. Sport is extremely responsive and still linear, but with big torque available way further down the tach than stock. Overall stock smoothness is retained - it is perhaps even smoother than stock in certain regards. The flash really wakes this car up. The criticism of a small PWG turbo with no top end is real, but the way this responds in the 2500rpm to 5000rpm range really does make the top end less important, and to be honest, not missed as much as I thought. the big boost surge in the lower ranges (2500rpm to 5000rpm) makes slingshotting past slower traffic simple as a twitch of the foot. In lower gears, it pulls very cleanly and quickly to 7000rpm, the top end surge would be great, but it pulls so quickly that it is fun to wind it to 7k. I'm sure on a highway pull, you'd want to shift at 6k, but the N54 was basically the same way - after 6k it was done. I had a JB4 on my E90, and that car it seemed the throttle was difficult to modulate. It was really difficult to get a predictable level of response when in boost. I feel with this flash, you still get the stock-like drivability when digging in. On a couple logs, its evident that I'm getting some timing pulls around 3.5 degrees on a few cylinders at certain times. Still pulls really hard, and I'm sure that new plugs will help. I may try a couple gallons of E85 to see if I can get the timing pulls better. As far as boot - looks like I'm getting around 13-14psi in the midrange tapering to a still respectable 11psi up around 6000rpm. The extra powertrain spunk has me badly needing to tighten up the suspension. Overall - Could not be happier! |

I flashed MHD stage 2 on my mostly stock ride (charge pipe replaced). I mostly commute (65)miles a day. Car feels great. I also used BimmerCode to code sport transmission. Such nice quick shifts.
Downpipe is next. But damn, the occasionally burst today and mid 50 degree temps. Wow, traction was an issue down low. I skipped stage 1 since I don’t beat on it and plane to do a fmic and DP. |

I think it is in what MHD refers to as an open beta. I have the Bimmer Geeks cable but they sent me the wrong adopter cable so can't quite tune my F10 yet. Between MHD, and Bootmod3 who has a more smoother tune? Does anyone have first hand experience with both tunes?

Why? Stage 2 is for high flow or catless downpipe with the WGDC, timing and probably fuel adjusted to suit. Not safe IMO. Stage 1 is for stock. Stage 2 is for high flow or catless and the tunes are calibrated to suit each.

One thing that really annoyed me about the stock "comfort" mode on my 2013 is that it rounds off all throttle inputs - this makes it difficult (especially with a manual transmission) to slip the clutch accurately, and makes launching the car difficult to get consistent results. I feel that the MHD tune removes some of this layer and is more honest to your right foot. The rounded throttle inputs might be good for a limo driver on an automatic trans car, but sucks for us 6mt guys. The MHD tune fixes some of that. Because the MHD has higher boost targets, there is slightly longer time to go from light throttle to max boost, but this is just because the turbo has to spin faster. It feels a very slight bit more "turboey" but it is just the nature of the beast. Overall, the MHD is very smooth - light years smoother than a JB4. |

I would like someone to review my data log. I am concerned with all the timing corrections i'm getting once i get high in the rpms. Mods are vrsf chargepipe, vrsf downnpipe, and bms intake. MHD stage 2 tune on 91 octane.

I'm getting similar timing pulls on 30k mile plugs and Marathon 93 gasoline. I'm in Ohio with few laws requiring testing of fuel quality. I'm planning on doing 1 step colder plugs and coils to see if that improves.

hopefully the new plugs and coils help. I plan on getting new coils and plugs to see if that helps the correction issue. I have been told 91 is whats causing my timing corrections but idk im not expert. Sent my log to mhd to see what they think.

I went stage 2 because I’m going catless next month. The temps are cool here and I seriously spend the majority of the time in Eco Pro cruising at 80. I do enjoy the occasional on ramp and stop light challenge. Since I don’t beat on it and it will adjust and prevent damage by adjusting timing and other parameters as needed I didn’t want to even mess with stage 1.
Car is super smooth and highway mpg actually got better. Not sure if the improvement is MHD or the fact that my car was fully updated at the dealer last week. Auto stop start is super smooth after the BMW update, as is the brake release when using auto hold in traffic. Those two features used to be really jerky. You barely feel the car start now. Well I have some 0-60 numbers for my car. But first I need to state that the Bridgestone Serenity Plus tires are really lacking in the traction department.
Pre-flash the best I could muster was 6.7 0-60, MHD got it to 5.6, but traction sucks. Still, with better tires I think it would be even faster. Need to get the car lower so the staggered 19's that have Pilot Sport A/S3+ tires on them. Way better traction for sure. |

I just looked on the web and both Car and Driver, and Motor Trend got it in the high 5s on the stock N55. Were they brake boosting to get those times cuz I am nowhere close to those numbers.
