550xi GT
Have just ordered 550xi GT for July delivery - wondering if anyone else has experience with the 550xi or 550i

Did you get the Dynamic Drive (DD) Package and if yes, how have you found that?
I have ordered the 20" wheels and DD and expect this to provide a good combination. The 550i GT I test drove had DD and 19" wheels although it did not have the xDrive that I waited for. |

it does not feel as big as it looks - in fact to me, with the Dynamic Handling Package in 'sport' mode, it was very reminiscent of my original 540 - which is just what I was looking for after a string of 130 hatch, 335 coupe and 335 convertible

On my prior 335i I ordered all the performance-oriented options and virtually none of the comfort/convenience options. On the 535GT I reversed that strategy. I did not get the sport package or the active steering; the base model does come with Normal/Sport/Sport+ settings which offer some customization of handling characteristics.
On the 535i GT I'm averaging 22 mpg in my suburban mix of city/hwy driving. That's exactly what I averaged in the 335i with MT. To me the car feels exceptionally roomy in the interior, but I seek out larger parking spaces than before. I think the rear camera is a must for back-in parking. In sport+ mode it feels like a lively car, but with sport package I would expect it to feel much more so. The utility is terrific and comfort outstanding. I got the nappa leather interior - forget what it's called but the seats are off-white and the carpet black. Very nice inside! |

I have had my 550GT since December. I like it more and more each day. The room the luxury and the performance. Contrary to what may have been stated and/or written I have only recieved positive comments on the car. The acceleration is addicting, especially when you have dialed in all of the sport settings (suspension/transmission). Make no mistake it is a heavy car, but it is also very responsive for its size. You will not find a better riding, better accelerating, more luxurious and/or more spacious sedan/wagon ... period.

I didnt accurately monitor my fuel consumption, but I did short trip over the weekend - about 240 miles (each way). I was able to complete each 240 mile run with a little over a quarter tank left. My average speed was about 80mph.

I'm currently waiting for the 530d GT. Nearly the torque of the v-8, but close to the power of the i-6. 42mpg on the highway, and high 20's in the city. At the NYC autoshow, they said it would be coming next calendar year. I'd rather not wait, but I think it will be worth it. I'm assuming they will import the 530d, but if they opt for the 535d, it has essentially the same power as the 535i, and the torque of the 550i. There is a much bigger price hit on the 535d verses the 530d (in Europe - but, the diesel is actually cheaper there, which is not the case in the USA).

AFAIK: the x drive versions of the GT have not been released yet.

Dealer tells me mine will be one of first xDrives into US. BMW site shows build completed and 'awaiting shipment' status for mid-July delivery.
Not sure of other countries release date - hence asking if any experience.

The 550xi and the 530dx are supposed to be out in Europe this June, the 535xi and the 535dx in September. The diesel(s?) for the GT are scheduled in the USA for next calendar year...exactly when they show is still unknown.

550 GT xdrive
Took delivery on Friday. Coming from a 750, so there is an attitude adjustment required, but the car is quite comfortable, and fun to drive. I like the higher perch and responsiveness. Some of the option choices are befuddling though: for instance, rear camera should be standard equipment. Ordered the sunshade option, but that didnt include the rear window! That is a problem if you live where the sun shines! No CD changer unless you get the Logic Seven. Milage is iffy at this point, but time will tell. Overall, though, I give the car high marks for performance and space.

ummm - does the Pope wear a pointy cap?
remember, this car is built on the 7 series platform and it has plenty of rear legroom as well as many other 7 series features the rear seats are also very comfortable even with the standard ones. If I did not need the rare ability to have 3 people in the back I would have gone for the rear luxury package which makes them even better. I went for the contour/active/ventilated front seats and they are a delight.

As I'm sure you have realized by now, these cars are still relatively rare. I love it that way. Also please be sure to chime in after your first extended drive. You really need to hit the turnpike/highway/interstate/freeway or what ever applies in your area to appreciate how this car performs. I think I might be jealous seeing as though you have Xdrive Any difference perceived in ride height as opposed to GT's without XDrive?

no perceived ride height difference
have done first medium distance freeway drive and really like it three observations so far: - there is no compass indicator in the rear view mirror - my previous 335 convertible had that - the 'active seat' function is disappointing, while it lifts each side of one's butt, it is not connected to the lumbar system which is what I expected - the HUD is really great although you have to train yourself to not keep looking at the screen for navigation instructions
