Messages option missing
Hi guys,
Been enjoying my 2012 F10 520D for several weeks now, and covered some 8k miles in it already! Amongst some of the options, I went for the multimedia satnav system with 10" screen.. Strange issue however.. for the first 5 weeks, both my Blackberry and Nokia E72 would pair up with the phone menu and I could see the Messages option which would allow me to listen to my SMS and Emails. However the Messages option just disappeared one day and nothing seems to bring it back. Nothing has changed on the handsets, and when I took it to my nearest dealer (BMW Bradford), they managed to get my handset to pair up just fine with another F10 but not on mine. I've tried resetting the IDrive system (hold down Mute for 30 seconds) and that doesn't work either. I've also removed the phones from the menu and re-paired them... i've been through every setting I can think of.. but nothing. I can only put it down to a software glitch on the Idrive system. I know it might sound like a gimmicky option, but I found the ability to listen to my emails on the move very useful and just meant I had less to do when I got back home or to the office.. Also, just on the principle that a brand new £35k motor should have everything working for more than 5 weeks.. is not asking for too much. The dealership have been pants really and I've been told they'll get back to me.. couple of weeks on, and apart from a call asking what software levels i'm running on my handsets, nothing since. Anyone else had this issue, any ideas for a fix please? |

How annoying. I use that option daily too (BlackBerry 9800) and I've had no issues. I guess all you can do is insist the dealer reloads / updates the software.

This to happened to me, Iw worked out if you remove the bluetooth music option (ie to play music off your phone via bluetooth) the messages reappear. It seems it cannot do messages and music, even if you never play music by this option. Good luck.

Ah that's interesting guys, will try that thanks.
Took a call from the dealership... apparantley it will need a software update and BMW don't sanction them for bluetooth problems. I let him have it when he told me that... they're gonna come back to me |

Just been out and tried it again... music was enabled as it happens, but disabling it makes no difference. I deleted the phone and re-paired it with just telephone enabled and even restarted the IDRIVE.. same problem

Well after trying the software update function via the USB drive (which worked fine), it hasn't rectified the problem and I've just emailed BMW customer services as I think this is a total farce to be honest.
I know it's a problem with my car as the function was working, and the dealer managed to get my handset to work with another car just fine proving it's not the handset. Has anyone tried emailing BMW before? Using their contact form, I just get a 'database error'.. Googling it, I found this is a very common issue, so I found an email address for them at customer.services@bmw.co.uk and another for jane.noble@bmw.co.uk so I've emailed them both.. |

Well I've just left it with BMW after escalating with customer services... and to my horror, they were still refusing to keep the car stating that BMW technical won't let them do a software update and it's the software on my phones!
I left my phone with them and said you can try it in every BMW you have in here and if doesn't work with one of them, then show me. This is complete madness, and whilst I love the car, I'm seriously put off by the lack of after sales car - for a car that is barely 10 weeks old. Anyways let's see what happens, but I have a sneaky feeling they won't (be able?) fix it. |

Any updates on that? I took delivery of my approved F11 today and I have noticed a similar problem. When I test drove the car a week ago, I connected my phone to the car and could see my address book but no messages. As part of the deal with the salesman, I got BMW to update the software to the latest version. Well, today I connected my and my wife's phones to the car and my wife's phone showed both the message function and the address book. Mine shows only the messages but no address book. I find this very peculiar...

Your problem is not related to the OPs. Not all phones will upload the address book automatically - some you need to "push" the contact list to the car (or any other hands-free device, come to that) and some phones do not send the address book via BT at all. This one is not the car's fault.

It's usually a setting on the phone, i.e. "do you want the address book to be public (available via BlueTooth) or not?" Perhaps yours is set differently to your wife's?

Another thing that you may want to check is that you have authorised the car to have access to the phone book on the phone. When you first connect/pair the phone and it retreives the phonebook it will typically prompt for permission on the telephone. I'm sure we can sort this one out. |

Thanks guys. OK, I did not explain in detail and for that I apologise. Both my wife and I have HTC Sensation (Android phones) and both connect to the same car (F11) no problem. Both get the messages all right, my wife's phone gets the address book all right and the contact details stay there. Mine connects OK the first time I pair the phone, both messages and address book. After three minutes the address book is nowhere to be found, and I get a 'no contacts stored' on the professional navigation screen.
When pairing both phones for the first time to the car, I get a pop up screen asking me if I want to allow the phone to share my address book with the car. In both cases I chose yes and tick the box that says 'always accept'. But while in my wife's case the address book stays, mine disappears. The funny/weird thing about it is that my address book information (name of contact etc) is there (on the dashboard underneath the rpm and tachometer) if I press the telephone button in my steering wheel, as well as appearing in my 'last numbers' and 'missed calls' and 'received calls' on my professional system. But as I said, it does not appear in my 'phone book' category in the professional system. If I delete and unpair my phone and the car and re-pair, the same thing happens. Phone book appears for a few minutes and then disappears again... |

OK - A couple more bits of info needed are both phones in the car at the same time and are you using the same car user profile for both you and your wife? Do you both use the same key or different keys?
How are the phones programmed to the system as Telephones or additional Telephones? If you look at the images below there is a different symbol for the phones with which it will use the phone book. The Handset has a little book on it if it will use the phone book. Let us know how you get on. This may have given you some ideas as to what is causing your problem or what else to try? |

also, both phones appear in the car's system as sharing music and address book... |

OK. After your messages I went to the car and deleted both my and my wife's phones from the system and created a profile for me in the car. I then paired my phone with the car.
Again, the same thing happened. Both messages and address book appeared on the car screen. After a while though the address book was again lost, and I got the 'no contacts stored' on the professional navigation screen. I have taken screens of how the car display looks, along with software version etc. See if you can make any sense out of it! |

As you can see, both phones appear as if they share the address book with the car, as plus the names of my contacts appear in the 'recent calls' section as well as in the display underneath the tachometer, but not in the 'contacts' section in my screen. It does not make any sense...
P.S: The pictures above are not in the right order, but you can see what I mean... |

Do an over-the-air software update. I did this the other week and it makes the media (iPod touch) work better. Can't do any harm.

Mine remains the same... Just a side note. She has 77 contacts, I have 158. I think it might be it. I am deleting contacts as we speak... |
