Upcoming M550d Reportedly Revealed to be 381 HP / 516+ lb-ft torque and AWD Only
BIMMERPOST NEWS Rumored F10 M550d Reported to be 381 HP / 516+ lb-ft torque and AWD Only The rumor coming out of a BMW dealer presentation held in the Netherlands last week is that the previously rumored M550d will officially come in with 381 HP from its tri-turbo inline-6 cylinder diesel motor, far lower than the initial speculations of 500+ HP. But it will make over 516 lb-ft torque! Finally, it will be AWD-only, as speculated earlier. This new tri-turbo diesel F10 5 series was previously confirmed to be coming, but a power figure was not yet known. That set off a round of high horsepower estimates because this model was supposed to have been tuned by BMW M. Production of the M550d will begin next March, but it's not yet known whether this model will be available in North America. Future applications for this new tri-turbo diesel motor will include at least the X5 and X6. Source: driving-fun * The image featured in this story is what originally set off the original speculations. It's taken from a new BMW brake pad package shows the appearance of a new model - "M550dX" P.S., the other report coming out of this dealer presentation is that there will be the introduction of an M135i with 320hp next summer. See http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=614224 for more details. |

Just to clarify; this will not be a diesel M5. It will be far from it actually as this car only produces 381 Hp whereas an M5 produces 560 and pretty much equal tq from the gas model. This car should really not get an M designation and IMHO BMW is going downhill as a brand fast, sure their sales are great but certain things happen when sales are great.
I can't quite figure out the point of this car

Ain't gonna knock it till I drive it. Sounds like it's positioned pretty nicely between the 550 and m5 for those in cold/snowy climates.

Ten M models: 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-series, 6GT, X3, X4, X5, and X6. Five non-M models: 1-, 7-series, X1, X2, and Z4 (the fact that the trucks get an M-model and the roadster doesn't is a crime, by the way). How far BMW has fallen...

This is not the first time BMW has done the M 5xxi
Remember the E28 M535i? I don't see a problem here. I'm more interested in the tri-turbo diesel powerplant

Me neither.
The price of this uber diesel will be similar to the 550i (extremely rare in Europe) and very close to the M5. I would definitely prefer the M5.

Guys, what does it actually mean when BMW put an M behind the name of a non-M car? Are there any components that are tuned by the M division in these cars?
Reason I'm curious is that apparently there will be a M135i F20 hatch... WTF does that mean?! |
