New car prep question
Will be receiving my AW F10 in a couple weeks and am looking for recommendations on new paint care? I have no idea of how to prep or wax new car ?? I have heard conflicting things about new paint if it should be waxed right away or not?? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I arranged to have my local Swissvax authorized technician pick up my F10 before BMW even took the stickers off! He cleaned the paint and applied Swissvax Crystal Rock among other detailings.
From what I learned I would prevent the dealership from doing as much as you can to you car, in my experience whether here in Europe or the U.S., dealer preps are dealer preps.

1. Clean/polish/protect using standard method. (must be repeated 1-2 yearly) 2. Clean/polish/protect using a permanent coating like Opticoat or CQuartz. (permanent) method 1: http://www.detailedimage.com/Ask-a-P...ocess-bmw-550/ method2: http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-det...st-review.html

Keep the dealer away from anything that isn't mechanical.

I am going to go to a ferrari dealership and prep a new Nero 458 Italia next week, here is the game plan:
wash clay paint correction over 1-2 days (going for perfect and these cars dont come from the factory perfect) cleanse paint apply sealant to everything but "to be clear filmed" areas condition interior seal wheels inside and out Thats a true new car prep! Whether it takes one day (doubtful) or two days, this car will come out stunning to say the least! Case in point, a new car needs a thorough once over! new does not mean good in all cases! I would tell the dealership NOT to wash or even touch your car, drive it home, find a detailer in your area, let him do his thing, then go drive your freshly conditioned car! |

My advice is to have your wax/sealant and polish made by the same company/line for optimal bonding, otherwise you might need an IPA type wipe down after polish. Look for sealants/wax that contains polymer and with easy wipe down to save work. Also there are 2 types of compound/polish out there that you want to check on to see which fits you better (SMAT vs DAT).
But honestly like others said.. DIY with good results require alot of investments and time. I would definitely paid extra for a good detailer if you don't enjoy or not willing to put in the time and money into detailing. But there are more bad ones out there than good ones, and they often leave holograms/buffer trails that you won't even notice until later or IPA wiped own. Wax/polish oil usually would hide those damage until wax/sealant are worn down. Last edited by HouseofPang; 01-18-2012 at 12:03 AM.. |
