The last piece of chrome on my 550i were the chrome Trapezoid exhaust tips. They needed to go.
I actually like the quiet ride on the 550, so replacing mufflers for sound was not an option. After some carefull measuring I decided to install Borla Stainless Steel tips -PN 20154. (I got these from Summit Racing $55 ea) After a trip to my local Powercoating shop - we decided on "Gray Ice" which is a Ceramic high temp - dark gray coating with a matt finish. These almost match my Ferric Grey 312 wheels perfectly. Probably would have done black if I had the M Sport black diffuser. Cut off the old factory tips and tack welded on the new tips. Tips are slanted with a rolled lip. Plug and wire tie off the factory vacuum line and we're done Total cost $380 Last edited by tp550i; 01-02-2012 at 10:00 AM.. |

Very very nice!
I was thinking of doing something similar to my quad Supersprint exhaust tips. Maybe black chrome finish would suit my Space grey with M diffusor?

I think Black chrome look would look good with the M Sport, would match the other gloss black trim on the car.

Thanks for the input.
BTW - how do You like the ride with the ACS springs? I just got mine from Schnitzer in Germany, but have not had time to install yet.

I really like the ACS springs, it feels like a different car. You'll be pleased.

@tp550i:
Never liked the trapezoid. This looks way better. How do you like the Continental DW's? Are they the stock size?

Conti DW's have been great, yes stock size. Tire Rack has awesome pricing on these 20's right now. I wanted the Michelin Pilot SS, but they have not released the P245/30ZR20 yet. I have not driven the DW's in heavy rain, that'll happen this summer.

My car came equipped with 19" Dunlop Sport Maxx RFT. They were "OK" but the 20" Conti DW's ride and handle better. Downside is now I have a space saver spare/jack strapped down in the trunk.

I like the look, agree that the trapezoid isn't the right look for your BMW. Looks good!

Tips look nice, I wrestled with the AC Schnitzer (you can see it in my signature link below) tips that are more oval and the quad tips but for personal taste I remain with the oval.

nice work, looks good.
I got fedup of my Trapezoid exhaust tips, seems like all the new cars have them now. Am i the only one that think BMW has crapy taste in exhaust tips? Just look at all the M cars, they always have the same quad tips, not very original anymore.

Agree - instead of BMW leading the way, its been more like copying someone else. But its all personal preference - I am sure some folks like the factory tips. Not me

The factory exhaust is about 2-1/4" in diameter, but a good shop can make the tips 2-1/2" inlet diameter work.
I'd be more concerned about the 4" diameter outlet, since the factory muffler outlets are about 3-1/2" apart, center to center, the 4" dia. tips will be a very tight fit -both side to side and up against the 550 standard diffuser. Its worth a try, you can always return the tips to Summit and go with 3" tips like the ones I installed

Plug and wire tie off the factory vacuum line and we're done
Total cost $380[/QUOTE] Thanks for sharing...it looks great! How is the sound with two outlets open all the time on each side? I am concerned about drone with after-market exhaust, but would like a litttle more engine note, like on my e60 550i. |

I was surprised to note very little difference. At idle and low rpm its slightly louder - but no where near what I expected having both sides open all the time. At cruise, there is no droning. Left me wondering why they installed vacuum flaps to begin with.

No check engine lights, but make sure to plug the vacuum hose. There is at least one member here that had a problem by leaving the vacuum hose end open

not sure if the the outlet configuration is exactly the same on the 535. I am going to hang onto the factory tips in case they need to go back on for any reason.
