First I couldn't figure out why it accelerates so slowly at 200km/h and why in the hell it revs so much, but now I see he is shifting manual. Bad driver.

Yay, performance, fuel efficiency and ...
Oh dear, turbos. I hope BMW has made some progress in banishing turbo lag from the ill fated N54 engine. Yes, I once drove a 335i and yes, it could go really fast, but typical of turbos from as far back as the '80s, there was lag followed by zing. The zing gave the car enough pickup so that the manufacturer could boast impressive 0-60 times, but the lag rendered the car utterly useless in the point-and-squirt city driving that I do. I mean, my '90s-era, 4-cylinder minivan has WAY better throttle response than did the be cursed 335i.
So while this 550d appears to be a power/fuel economy trade-off tour de force with formidable acceleration numbers, will it be any good in the kind of cut and thrust driving that is the bread and butter of car-crazy Southern Cali? I guess time will tell. Meanwhile, it's NA all the way for me |

Since I'm driving a 3-series diesel (with a lot of kilometers on the dash), I'm looking forward to a new 6-cylinder. But a 5-er is to big for me. Why doesn't BMW put that engine into a 3-series?

Now that we've seen the official specs on this gem of an engine, I think those of us saying the driver should've upshifted sooner may be right. As suspected, power starts to fall off sharply above about 4500 RPM and he ends up spending quite a bit of time accelerating on the downward slope of the horsepower/torque curves.

However, both had noticeable degrees of turbo lag. I guess there is just no way of getting around it, if you have turbos you are going to have lag, it's just a question of how much. |

Diesels are torque monsters by design, so perhaps BMW's turbodiesel 6 in the new 5'er has enough torque to begin with to give the car responsiveness before the turbo kicks in. Let's hope so for those Europeans who get to experience that machine. BTW, a friend of mine had a '86 Mazda 626 turbo 4-cyl back in the day and its turbo was designed to start spinning at 1500 rpm which was effective to overcome turbo lag. The car had great power and got excellent gas mileage on the freeway. I never understood why other automakers didn't copy that design. |

Manufactures just give you the framework, from that, you must tweak via mods. I have modded my current F10 a little to address the areas that I felt the manufacturer missed the mark on. I believe most of the critiques we notice are fully known to the manufacturers but a conscious decision is made to ignore the critique to satisfy another variable. Anyway, an effective ECU modification will remove any lag (or doubts).

Keep in mind that BMW (and other makers as well) include elements of delay into the drive-by-wire accelerator pedal to keep things like emissions low for certification. A tune or signal conditioner using the principles of the BMS Power Box would remove the artificial throttle lag/delay.
From a complete stop, I'm assuming the M550xd would behave similarly to my 335d, that is to say there would be about a 1/4-1/3 sec delay when you stomp the pedal down fully. When driving in DS-manual mode, the throttle response is near instantaneous and there is little turbo lag felt at all. This engine (and 8AT) in the F30 would be insane...with the lower weight than an F10, I would imagine that an M350xd it would be a low 4-second car, if it were ever to be produced. Regards D.
