strange cabin smell
Has anyone one experienced this? A strong "fishy" smell in the cabin after start up from cold. This gradually disappears within a mile or two.
Now I can almost hear the chorus of "DPF burn off",but I have experienced this before and it was a strong burning rubber like smell and always when stationary after a short trip. This is different in smell and time. I use Shell V power diesel only and have 19K on the clock.Just had this problem for the last few days. The previous DPF burn off smell was most noticeable outside the car, where this current smell is definitely in the cabin (but I am driving at the time lol) Any ideas? |

BMWUSA doesn't send either diesel engined GT model to the USA, so your pool of people that can comment is smaller than for most, more generic questions. I wish they did, as I'd have bought one, but that's another story...

Interesting point.Had service at 18K approx, which amounted to an oil service(which includes microfilter change) In view of the microfilter cost (over £100) I declined the filter change and just had the oil change.
Never had this problem before and was beginning to wonder if it was an aircon problem.I think I will bite the bullet on the filter, and if no improvement, try the aircon service. Thanks for your reply, Nigel |

Try removing filter and checking it for debris and giving a good hoover and smell test, I agree that they usually last a lot longer than 18k. £100 is crazy money for filters...any cheaper on ebay? Cheers Simon

I looked on eBay and there appears to be (genuine) BMW microfilters on sale for about £39 !! Also found a website with an idiots guide for DIY replacement, which looks reasonably simple (hope not famous last words!) Thanks again, Nigel |

Problem solved (for the moment anyway!)
I found a tip on BMWland (i think) which seems to have solved the problem. This involved car stationary, engine running, closing all the windows etc, opening all the vents and running the aircon on max temp full power for 30 mins.Of course muggins here forgot about it and the car was running for an hour. However,no more smells! So I assume this was a bacteria problem within the aircon system,or within the micro filter. Not sure which.Which ever one it's saved me an expensive fix at the dealership, for which I'm grateful. |
