Door Ding Prevention
Like most people on this forum, I try to watch where I park to avoid door dings. Yesterday I noticed that I did pick up a ding in my right rear fender. While I can get it fixed, I started to research what products are out there that could be used as a means to prevent door dings in those situations where you feel you are likely to get a ding. For example, parking in Long Term Parking at the airport, parking at a sporting event, etc.
So I found this product that looks like exactly what I was looking for http://www.doorshox.com/car-door-protector-features.htm The problem is that the product attaches with plastic coated magnets, and the outer skins of our doors are plastic. There are some cheaper products that attach with suction cups, but I would think that maybe they wouldn't stick to the doors for a longer period of time, especially if the car was dirty. Another thought is whether I really need them if the outer skin is plastic. Has anyone picked up a ding in their doors? Is the plastic less susceptible to dings?? Please let me know your thoughts. |

My only comment is that even though they look like they will work... they attract attention and would very quickly be removed... the thin cable could be cut.
I've seen others that cannot be removed on this thread so will search...

I use these on my 3 series, works very well and makes me relax when I park in a crowded parking lot. The 5 series doors are not plastic, they are aluminum which is why these will not work.

I assumed they were plastic since a magnet would not stick to the doors. I stand corrected

Magnets don't stick to aluminum either. I had paintless dent removal done on the passenger door and asked if there was any difference in terms if difficulty. The PDR guy said that it was a little trickier but that the procedure was the same.

I use these suction cup guards in my NYC garage where I pay extra for an assigned space. On one side I'm safe due to a pillar and another assigned space with a Mercedes owner who is careful but the other side is a constant rotation of different vehicles. However it is really not a public area where someone could just walk off with them. In my situation these work well to protect from hurried attendants. |

RH512,
Do the suction cups stick fairly well, even if the car is dirty. Those are the others I was considering. If they walk off, they are cheap, so I am not too concerned about theft. |
