Rear seat entertainment is pants
Hi
Rear seat entertainment is a nightmare to control and not practical if you have kids who can't control it. It is simply set up stupidly! Anyone else have it? |

I do. My friends love it, for some reason, i guess bmw designed it for adults. I never actually fiddled with it so i can't really comment about the user interface.

Yep, you can however it is a total pig to change a DVD half way through a journey... I wouldn't even mind if you could only control when stationary! I would give it 3 out of 10. It's easier when playing a movie off my iPod but even that is crappy to control

That is why I chose to get two iPads instead of getting the entertaintment system.
Ipads can play games and play HD videos.

haha i told my wife about that, i remember reading about you doing this (she asked me if we should get entertainment system if we go with the 5). she thought it was crazy before i explained to her the price comparisons, but with the ipads you get so much more. would be cool to pair those with the droid phone that can turn into a wireless hotspot. then your passengers can use the internet as well. great idea

...and yes, you can always tether your cell phone (if it is capable) to allow wireless internet using your ipad. You just have to get a good cover for the ipad (the thin cover that folds over the screen to make it look like a book when you open it) and just put them in the back pocket of the driver seat or the front passenger seat. This cover would hide the ipad in the pockets because you also don't want any vandals to break into your car trying to steal the ipads. Yeah, some thiefs are that desperate.

Isn't the ipad small and thin enough to put in that little pouch in the back of the front seats and can hide it from view? I don't have the F10 car yet so I am not really sure.

I totally agree that the Rear Seat Entertainment system needs rethinking. For an adult it is great but for small kids it is a nightmare.
I frequently have to try to set it up before setting off and tell my daughter that she can only watch one episode of Shawn the Sheep (current favourite)after the other in the order they are on the DVD, when she wants to watch the same episode again then she is out of luck. I think perhaps a software update to allow it to be controlled from the front iDrive shoule be possible but let's see at the moment I just get the message that the rear DVD can not be viewd on the front iDrive. Still saying this the system is great if you are old enough to use it - great quality and some nice features. The fact it is built in is also nice and on such a car I prefer this built in approach to an iPad with wires - just my opinion though. Cheers. Irish

DVD always starts from beginning
wondering if you have the same issue. 2013 F10 w/factory rear entertainment.
The DVD always restarts from the beginning - does not start from where you left off, no matter what combo turn car/dvd off. Very annoying w/ kids. Have to start DVD then go to last spot. |

1) play the DVD from the rear DVD player; 2) First switch on the set 3) and then start the car The system is a disgrace for good engineering. They should fire the clowns who designed it.

To control the DVD menu, I have to stop the car, get out of the car, open a rear door and control the system with the remote. Ridiculous.

Hmmm, not sure i understand. My kids have no problem with DVD in rear. The 6 DVD changer can be played on front and back screens. My kids had no problem figuring it out. But, you can control it from the front if car is in park. DVD is awesome and I totally recommend it. Yes, the UI is quirky, but no quirkier than the rest of idrive. BMW ain't gonna let you control a function from the front like this while the car is in motion. No way no how. Plus, a car with rear entertainment is likely going to have kids, so BMW is not going to let you wipe out your kids while you are distracted fiddling with the rear DVD from the front while in motion. |

Thanks EdwinF10 but negative - doesn't work with mine. I've tried every possible permutation with 10 different DVDs...ALWAYS starts from the beginning

Finally!!!
After over 5 months and 3 trips to the dealer, they finally upgraded the software and the rear DVD works perfectly. No hiccups, crashes, faults...and DVD starts from where it stops every time no matter how i turn on/off car/dvd system. Wish they would have upgraded back in january - would have saved a lot of frustration.
