Dinan Stage 5
I’ve had Dinan S5 installed for a few weeks now (including some down time for HPFP and fuel supply module) and I’m can honestly say I’m very pleased. I was running S3 since last October and was looking forward the Intercoolers and Cold Air Intake upgrade to help deal with Florida heat and humidity.
You can immediately notice a difference in the off-idle and low rpm ramp up – it almost feels like the gas pedal has been remapped – this car feels responsive and gets moving immediately – zero hesitation. I’ve been observing intake air temps with my P3 vent gauge for several months leading up to the upgrade. Obviously the intake gets heat soaked at idle including stop and go traffic. The lowest temperature differential I observed with the stock intercoolers was in the 15-20 deg F range. This was while moving at a steady cruise, not at idle. In other words if ambient air temperatures were 80 deg F the lowest intake air temperatures I was seeing were 95-100 deg F while moving. The 23% larger intercoolers and CAI are not just marketing hype. They work well together. Yesterday morning I observed as low as 9 degrees differential. Later in the day, ambient temps climbed to 90 deg F and I saw consistent 100 deg F at the intake. That’s damn impressive given the tight engine compartment, turbo heat, etc. The lower intake temperatures make the car feel more “crisp” and responsive. The S5 software is smooth, no lag or flats spots and pulls hard all the way through the rpm range. Dinan upgrades certainly are not cheap, but the quality is outstanding and they obviously have done their homework. If I had to describe the difference in the 550 from stock to S5 in one word – amazing

Great job and write up. My car is currently in the dealer bay getting Dinan Intercoolers and an the Stage 4 flash done now as we speak. Will probably add the CF Air intake and the LSD in July to "complete" the car. They gave me an F10 528i loaner while its being worked on an man I can say the difference was noticeable from a driving/performance stand point.
Let us know more as you go alone with your car and I'll surely post my thoughts on mine when I get her back this week!

Just got the car back and agree the car is quite improved with the Dinan Intercoolers and Stage 4. Add the Eisenmann Race exhaust along with the H&R springs and Dinan Shockware I've done and the car is a wolf in regular 5 series clothing guys!. Its very very quick and power is now smooth across the powerband and gears. Throttle response seems crisper and more aggressive. Torque is there...hello car just pulls easily and seems to have both in deep reserve. I snapped my neck just with quick application of throttle from a rolling start approaching a light on the way home. Can't wait till tomorrow's drive both to work and home as there are a few roads I want to re-visit!
Thumbs up to Dinan though must admit this does makes me want to take a road trip and drive it down to Morgan Hill, CA to shake Steve Dinan's hand personally and give him one of my squadron patches and coins in appreciation! I hear he's working on bigger turbos for the 550i too..my god. NO! Lord help us! LOL

I agree that the larger intercoolers make a noticable difference and probably a necessity for those living in hot climates.
Props to Dinan for getting this much hardware and software to market in just a few years. Do you think we are done at S6 with the larger turbos?

I'm at stage 4 now and I agree, it's awesome.
So awesome in fact that I'm putting new rears on this week after screaming through my current rears in only 6,000 miles That works out to $0.13/mile in rear tires. Worth every penny!

Concur...stage 5 must be amazing for those who have it. Bravo! Would like to hear their impressions. Any down sides other than the extra upgrade fee [but at least Dinan only charges you the difference if you already have a stage...for me it was about $225 w/install fee].

I can't believe no one makes a "real" intake replacement for the N63. All the trouble Dinan went through to the design the CAI, why not replace the stock air box and tubings?
I'm just bitchin that not even K&N makes replacement filters for the N63, let alone anyone making real CAI. |
