Keyless go
So this morning my wife took the 550 to work. With the cold winter we make sure we start up the cars 15 minutes prior to leaving. About 10 minutes after she left I get a frantic call that the keys had been lost. She was in a dunkin donut parking lot and turned the car off to get her coffee. When she went back the car wouldn't start and she frantically tour apart the car and dunkin donuts looking for the "lost keys".
I happened to find the keys at home. Both sets to the 550 were sitting in our key tray next to the garage door. I have no idea how the car drove 5 miles without a key. Has anyone else experienced this or is this just more to do with my lemon that is being bought back.

I actually posed this question a few months back when I realized this. Once the car is started, it can be driven without the key in proximity of the car as long as it is not shut off. So never get a false sense of security that your car cannot be driven away because the key is in your pocket and you are "just running into the dry cleaners". If you go and bring your wife the keys, it will start right up. Nothing is wrong with your car.

As for "running into the dry cleaner" I do that all the time with the car on, especially when its freezing out. I guess I have to change my ways. I just find it strange that the 528 wont go but the 550 will

This has nothing to do with lemon buyback, it sounds more like human error to me. First of all, there is no need to warm up any mordern day cars, especially for 15 minutes, but I wont go into that right now. If you are going to warm up the car, lock the door with the mechanical key so you will be sure that you have the key on you when entering the car. I had a 528i loaner a few months ago and I could drive that car without the key fob just like my 535i.

If you have comfort access you can start the car and then lock it with the remote, I used to do this with my X5 in order to warm the interior on cold mornings. Two benefits, you don't forget the key and someone can't just jump in and drive away with it while it's unattended.

Yes, I can also drive my 2011 535XI without the key if it's already running and no there is nothing wrong with the car. The car flashes a message covering a large portion of the cluster telling the driver that the key is not present. Really hard to miss. That message even appears when I get out of the car with the key in my pocket to get the mail. Just sounds like your wife either wasn't paying attention or did not know what the message was telling her. Glad it turned out OK.

Point taken. I actually don't do much dry cleaning, but I have them launder and iron my shirts for work. At $1.25 per shirt, I would be silly to waste time pressing them on my own.

Went in for a doctor's appointment last week. Came out 1:30 later to find car locked but still running. All my fault, not any design flaw with BMW. Don't get upset when the Ultimate Driving Machine does what we have asked of it.

Actually, that is sort of a design flaw. Other cars I had will not let me lock the car with fob if the engine is running but it will let me lock it with the mechanical key.

I used to have my dress shirts laundered but they use steam and high heat to dry and press my cotton shirts and after a time the buttons would become brittle and snap in half as I was late for a meeting. I just iron my own now or ask my wife to do them.

just lock your car with the remote if you leave it running. if someone is willing to smash the window to gain entry and steal it, let them have it and call the police. doesnt seem like a big deal to me.
