Auto Start/Stop retrofit
I have a 61 plate F11 with the standard start/stop button.
Is it possible to retrofit the automatic start/stop function by fitting the newer auto start/stop button? Is the wiring already in place, and just needs coding, or is there more to it? Any advice much appreciated |

I don't think you would want it! It is so unrefined in BMWs....

Why would you want to do this?
Sure it reduces your emissions but it does nothing for your fuel consumption so you are just left out of pocket. If you are that bothered about the environment, perhaps you could trade in for an i3 |

OK on manuals, horrid on autos.

I find it too much trouble to use this on my manual. Put the gear into neutral, put on the handbrake, take feet off pedals..... then the lights suddenly change and it's a rush to reverse the previous! I was always under the impression that the car uses more fuel to fire up the engine instead of sat there? Unless you're sat at temp lights for 5 minutes? Maybe this was a myth from years ago?

You don't need the handbrake on, you just have to be in neutral.

A European study showed "idle off" devices, (stop-start technology) for petrol engines, can save 8 - 10% fuel in urban driving, diesel about 5%. Diesels use less fuel per hour on idle, than the same size petrol engine. I'm pleased my 535i doesn't have the stop-start, as in my sort of driving it is so unusual to have a stop, it takes you by surprise in vehicles with it fitted. Then I normally switch the engine off anyway when I have a stop, say at road works, have done so for years, as leaving the engine running is a waste. HighlandPete |

I didn't mind it in the manual as you could control its action - if you were pulling up to a T junction you might keep the clutch depressed and then off you go if it's clear. With the automatic it's a proper pain in the arse and I can understand the hate. I pull to a stop at the end of my road and the engine stops and then starts immediately again as I want to pull away.
I've coded mine off now.

The short answer is no. The long answer is this. There are multiple components that lay underneath the auto start stop function, not just the button and wiring. Coding, modules, and other hardware is required in order for the engine and computers to understand what is happening with the start stop. I wish it was easier, as I assumed my grandmothers 2011 528i with the inline 6. Only 60k miles and is actually taken care of for being a grandma car lol. Sorry brotha. |
