Navigation Unit Restart?
Not sure what to call it, but the center screen (navigation) completely shut off and restarted on me today about 4.5 hours into a 5 hour drive.
Just after I switched audio sources from my iPod under the center console armrest to bluetooth audio from my iPhone and it just went blank, and everything restarted. the "BMW Connected Drive" graphic was displayed and then it informed me that my route guidance was interrupted and asked me if I'd like to resume route guidance. It was a minor inconvenience, and everything seems to be working as it should now, but it's giving me some concern. Is the occasional restart like that "within normal limits" of operation, or should I ask the dealer about it whenever I'm there next?

It is called "IDrive", yours should be the NBT version. No it is not common. I would mention it on your next visit.

i've had a similar issue recently...just started in the past few months (had the car about a year now) going to bring it up with my Service Advisor when it goes in for an oil change in March...

I've had a very occasional restart - for me it seems to happen if Im connected via USB to the iPhone and am using the BMW Connected app. More often is when I do a force restart of the iDrive because I'm having trouble with either the bluetooth connectivity or can't get it to play music properly on the phone.
You can do a restart by holding down the on/off switch on the dash for around 30s. |

It happened to me a couple of times last year, like you after about 2 hours driving, took it to the dealer and they said there were no fault codes and to keep an eye on it, since then it hasn't happened but I havnt driven for that length of time

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I often have anywhere from 2-8 hr drives to and from client locations, so if this issue only occurs during longer drives, I will get a fair amount of repeatability. I have a 5.5 hour drive home tomorrow, and then another 2 hour round trip on Saturday.

What is build month/year of car?
What version firmware is on your iDrive? to check firmware version do the following: 1. Start car 2. Click Nav button on console controller. 3. Click iDrive controller right to the Options screen. 4. scroll down to Navigation System Version. 4. Last line will show this info.

this happens to me once in awhile too. I think it has something to do with my bluetooth connection with my Galaxy S7. Whenever I try to use bluetooth audio or even bluetooth calls, the connection drops and keeps trying to reconnect. Sometimes it'll be stable on some drives, and others it won't stay connected. On some occassions, the iDrive will just completely restart, sometimes 2 or 3 times during a 30 minute drive.
I'll try updating the software to see if that helps.

I too have had this issue for a while. First used an Apple Iphone 6 without issue. (At least not that I noticed) Switched to Samsung S7. On bluetooth (audio and tel) it almost always resets after 20 minutes. As I normally only drive about 30 minutes i'm not sure if it would happen again after the next 20 mins.
The dealer found no errors and reloaded the cars software. Problem still the same. I have tried many variations, it seems its the Bluetooth Telephone that is giving the problem. On audio bluetooth it doesn't switch off. BMW dealer says only option is to replace the idrive system! About EUR1600. For now i'm not using the blutooth and hoping for an update or a cheaper solution... |

I've tried to update my bluetooth/comm software, but something is amiss. When I go to the bmw.com/update site, the available software shown is for MN-002.xxx and TN-002.xxx which seem like files that are older than what I already have on my car.
However, in my car it shows the current versions as: Media: MN-003.011.002 Phone: MN-003.011.002 When I attempt to load the update file from a USB drive, i get a message saying that the software on my usb drive is not compatible. Anyone else experience this?

I have had the same thing happen with the Bluetooth connection drop out not the entire unit though. Could this be making the unit crash possibly and it is soft booting the unit? Thanks for the link on the upgrade database was looking for that for a while now.
