f10 550i Rod Bearing Replacement
well guys, after my f10 550i started having rod bearing noises i have decided to try to replace bearings with engine still in the car.
i will be dropping the subframe and both oil pans in order to get to the bearings. Then i will check the crankshaft for damage and all of the crank bearings. Hopefully it didnt damage anything else since i noticed the issue as soon as it developed. any tips or tricks for getting the oil pans off? for supporting the engine? |

Engine support? Yes this:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...595sch01a~sch/ I have two of these in the shop, work like a dream. The rest of the job? That is a BIG job, it may be a bit more than you anticipate. Book time is 22 hours on the rod bearing replacement. |

If you already suspect Rod damage I would not even consider going through the oil pans. I think the chance that you have already spun a bearing is quite high if you are hearing a noise. I feel the odds are pretty high that youare going to need to replace the Rod and possibly the crank.
Not to mention it is going to be next to impossible to do a proper bearing selection upside down. Stuck said BMW flat rate time was 22 hours I am assuming this requires engine r&r? |

Aftermarket warranty just replaced the motor in my 550i for a spun bearing. Total was about $13k I think, $7k being motor. Would have been better to goto indy shop but scenario didn't work out that way.
I would try to figure out the extend of damage and go from there. IIRC it was 4-5 hours to tear down the bottom oil pan assembly and assess. From there it was another 6-8 to tear down rest of the bottom end. Sucks hard, glad I had warranty, worried about the rest of my time with the car though. Goodluck! Hope it isn't too bad. Matt BTW, mine happened at 60k, getting on freeway..

I tore down oil pan and Subframe Saturday. Replaced bearings. Polished everything up. Assembly lube. Threw it back together and it ran flawless for 75 miles at 1500-2000 rpms. Then it started knocking again.
