Oil in breather tube ?
So while doing the spark plugs today, I had to remove the charge pipe. There was a breather tube that needed to be unplugged, and there was a fair amount of oil in it. Is this normal ?
On some of my previous cars this seemed to be a normal thing, but want to confirm this is nothing to worry about. |

FWIW, you are not suppose to remove the pipe from the cylinder head, bmw warns of damage to the cylinder cover if you do this.

Why would it damage the cylinder cover though ? |

Mine looked just like that on both N55s I've done it on.
I'm impressed you could get that off without it breaking - the clips and tube itself can be pretty brittle. As long as it's intact, I see no problem removing it, and can't see how it would damage anything. |

Yeah, it was really brittle, it was a PITA to get it off without the whole thing just disintegrating. So sounds like the oil is normal and nothing to worry about ? |

Breather tube removal
One way to get the breather tube off is to take the 4 tabs one at a time, pry them up slightly with a small screw driver and put a piece of wire under the tab to hold it above the ridge. Once you do all 4, the tube connector will pull right off.
I actually replaced my tube with a small piece of rubber heater hose and hose clamps. I kept the breather tube connectors on each end along with the heater circuit. My Breather tube had cracked. |
