does a 2014 535d x drive take a special oil?
I have a 2014 535d and I normally order the oil online, but was wondering if it’s just regular 5w30 full synthetic? I went to autozone and the Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic specifically says “for gasoline engines.”. So I didn’t want to get something that says “for gasoline engines” for a a Diesel engine.

No, BMW requires at least LL04 which only comes, if in Mobil1 guise, as Mobil1 EXS Formula 5W30. BMW technically requires 0W30 LL12FE for your car, but most seem to agree that 5W30 LL04 will work.

Having a 535d as well, I've looked into the oil thing too. As far as I know, LL04 is required as it's a low ash content is necessary with the diesel's pollution controls. While a BMW sticker under the hood recommends the use of 0W-30 oil, I not found one with the LL04 rating. The good news, however, is that Walmart sells a Pennzoil synthetic (made from natural gas) with a LL04 rating and the label specifically mentions BMW and diesels. It is a 5W-30 and sell for less than $30 for a 5 quart bottle.

I think I said that 0W-30 was recommended, but I've yet to see a source for it. Where are you buying yours?

I live in a relatively hot climate so 5W30 LL04 is probably fine. The dealers are likely one of the few places to get 0W30 LL12FE. PL |

Not to be difficult, but I am not sure that BMW USA offers 0W30 for diesels. For example, FCP Euro offers only 5W30 BMW branded oil. At this point, I am getting the free oil changes under warranty, so it's not a urgent, but eventually, I'd like to change my own oil.
When I took delivery of my 535d less than a year ago with less than 5k miles, I am assuming that it came with factory-installed LL12FE oil. However, I really didn't notice a marked difference in the mileage after the first oil change. Presently, I am getting about 40 mpg and 35 mpg for interstate and suburban driving respectively. If 0W30 oil improves on that, I hope it becomes available here in the future. |

When my maintenance plan is over, I'll switch to Amsoil 5W-30.
