N20 Timing Chain whine (528xi)
I searched extensively for this topic within this forum to no avail. Now I figure I'd ask to see if anyone is willing to please share any experience with this issue. I currently drive a MY13 528i xDrive w/57k miles and it is currently with a SA with Ferman BMW in Palm Harbor because I refuse to go to Reeves in regards to the timing chain.
I used to own a F30 a few years back until a nasty accident now I have the F10 which I bought about 6 months ago, so I'm familiar with TC issues plaguing the N20. I love it and want to at least experience the vehicle for at least 3 years. (Accident free as well lol) Rundown: - Made an appointment with Ferman BMW Wed 19th 7:30am (Explained to SA I hear whine when revving the engine especially on cold start, when in D it really sings past 1500 rpm) - Received loaner (2019 530i ) and left car with them for 2 days - Received call from adviser that there ISN'T any sound and everything is normal. (Found that hard to believe but said I'll be there first thing Monday morning 6/24 7:30) - Monday, I arrive and check it out myself (before I left and paid). SA walks me to the vehicle he opens the hood and I start the car... lo and behold the girl is singing louder than before, whining harder than Mariah Carey - His expression said it all. He looked shocked and pissed. He then immediately stopped the associate taking in my loaner and instructed them to give it back to me. This is where I'm currently at and really unsure what's going to happen going forward. Now I'm not in any rush for any bad news because the loaner I received is plenty adequate but I do miss my girl. I know this process is a waiting game but I'm interested to hear any of your thoughts. Much appreciated. Last edited by Dev_inlife; 06-25-2019 at 01:24 PM.. |

You are covered by extended warranty of 7 years or 70K miles for the N20 motor, don't worry and let the process take its course.

[/QUOTE] And I am the opposite. I go to Reeves (40 minute drive) for the last couple of years because I refuse to go to Ferman even though it is on my way to work (15 minute drive). Basically it comes down to the SA's and Ferman's belief that a SA group meeting is more important than dealing with the customers who have shown up for their appointment. This happened to me twice and to my wife once. |

This is normal procedure (not the "we found nothing" part). My SA and manager took the car out and heard it right away. They knew it was the dreaded timing chain and asked me to leave my car there and send them all the maintenance paperwork for the car so they can run the work up the chain to BMW NA. Once BMW confirmed that I had all routine maintenance performed, they approved, and then the work took a week to complete.
You'll be in your loaner for a while |
