Sharing my N20 Timing Chain Experience
2014 528i (luxury line, fully loaded)
62k miles, always dealer serviced on time or me changing the oil with BMW approved oil + Mann filter. Started hearing a whine on cold start, but overall the sound was pretty subtle. Didn't hear anything when the engine was at operating temperature. We were reaching the end of our extended timing chain warranty so I told my parents to make an appointment with BMW to check the chain and possibly score a replacement. Even if they determine the chain is good, we'll have it on record a dealership checked and okay'd it. Couple days after we drop the car off, they call and say the chain was indeed failing. Not sure on EXACT details since my parents were relaying the info, but apparently it was a big deal at the dealership. Said they had a few managers looking over the car and everything. When we dropped it off the service adviser made a comment saying she's never had someone come to her with a timing chain concern. Will update later, but the car is currently getting its warranty timing chain!

Can't say for the previous owner, but when we bought it at ~35k miles I set it to be always off.

OP - You'll be without your car for a little while. I hope they provided a loaner vehicle for you.
