Possible Issues with buying 550i?
Hi! I recently came across this 13' 550i for sale with around 54k miles on the odo and was wondering if it is a good idea to purchase a car with the N63 engine? Or would it be a smarter idea to go with a 528 or 535i? I've been back and forth between 3/4/5 series and can't pick one but currently, I'm leaning more towards the 5 series. I know BMW has a Customer Care Pkg for the N63 engines (I don't know If they are still honoring it). Along with that, I don't know if the repairs that BMW will make under the N63 (CCP) engine will make it reliable enough to surpass 100k miles. I heard the "recall" includes BMW checking and/or replacing the following items: checking the timing chain for stretching and replacing it if necessary, replacing the fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump, and low-pressure fuel sensor. I just wanted to know if buying this particular car would be a bad idea...I don't think the vehicle has had this "recall" performed yet. I also heard that this repair could take up to two weeks (which I'd be fine with if the car would be solid afterward). I just wanted to know if I should run from this car or hop on it before it gets sold. Thanks.

Didn’t they make changes to the engine in the 13 model year? The LCI brought about more changes but if I recall the 13 models had some mods to the engine... I have a 11 550i Xdrive the CCP was completed by the previous owner. I have had to spend about $3k in repairs on top of that. It’s not my daily driver so I would say consider it a fun to drive car when she runs well but not a daily driver. I second getting the extended warranty. I have Route 66 no deductible good for 5 years/100k miles.

I have 2013 550i with 52k miles
I had care package done three years ago with stuff you mentioned excluding timing chain that checked out ok I did buy warranty when my original warranty expired it was roughly $4000 only had to us it one time upper and lower oil pan gasket was replaced as of now I don't have any issues. I am planing on keeping the car oil consumption on 550i can be the issue but I believe it depends how you drive the car but if you look it up not only BMW cars have this issue its all modern cars ] we all can thank emissions. best of luck

Getting a warranty was one of the first things I was looking into...surprised these things don’t have a 5yr/100k miles pt warranty (although it wouldn’t do me any good in this instance) but still. Randomly fail for what like improper maintenance? Or just because of poor engineering?

Currently weighing those 2 options as well...The 535i might just be the best bet.

I agree with this. I would be uncomfortable buying a car with the expectation that BMW would replace the motor. Even if you received confirmation that it might be eligible for the recall, I believe that there's inherent risk in this approach.

Buying a 550i
I own a 2013 550i xDrive, M Sport. I am meticulous on maintenance of the vehicle. I have had the CCP completed before purchase in 2016 and since have had the Valve Stem replaced under the class action suit. The car does not burn a drop of oil and runs great @ 118,450 miles!...Tom

If you can't afford at minimum to get a 2014 550i, it's just not worth the risk to own an N63 engine. Some owners have reported no issues, but many (many) more had/have to deal with $$$$ issues.
I'm biased, so if you can get a 2014+ 550i, def. worth every penny. I've also driven the 535i and it's awesome to drive. The other way you can look at it - cost of regular maintenance and repairs. Parts for the 550i are more expensive, and if you are capable enough to work under your hood, the 550i is a nightmare because of how tight everything is packed. I'm dreading the day that I need to replace something as simple as a water pump or alternator, nevertheless something more involved. Already reminisce about the old days of working on my E46. Sigh. Also, if you don't absolutely need all-wheel drive, avoid the xDrive. It's great to have and mechanically very sound, but substantially limits your options for upgrades, most notably the suspension.

OP, is this your first BMW?? If so, I would again highly recommend to stick to a later model F10 N55...2013+ is good. I have seen PLENTY of 535 with under 70k for under 20k. Yes, same prices as a 550, but we all know WHY!!! Also, some people dont understand any 550 has a bad name, so when you buy it, good luck selling it down the road...Just a thought to consider... Only option will be selling to a BMW guy who appreciates the work done but that would take time.
Overall, the 550i is a bargain, but these cars can be whores and suck you dry... Last edited by OnlyGerman; 05-04-2020 at 10:07 AM.. |

Spoke with the BMW dealer today and it’s had the CCP done already by the previous owner and out of sheer luck for me the car was regularly serviced at that dealer it’s been serviced every 5k miles as well. I know replacing the engine has a ton of factors involved that could possibly all turn to a negative.

My uncle owns his own Indy shop for cars like BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc..So anything that needs to be fixed I’ll just have him check it out. Xdrive isn’t a necessity for me because it hardly ever snows here and when it does I’m at home lol. |

It was burning oil bad at first about a quart every other fill up. I happened to buy some Royal Purple, and after using 3 quarts over the course of about a month it stopped burning oil completely. Love my BMW. Last edited by monos; 05-08-2020 at 02:03 PM.. Reason: fixed spelling and syntax |
