Years ago, I had a guy in front of me on the parkway in an 8 series holding up everyone. When I finally got around him, he had a newspaper open on steering wheel, an electric shaver in on hand and a phone in the other. |

Years of experience helps with the anticipation of normal and abnormal driver behavior and traffic patterns. Have to practice those habits even moreso when using the bike for commuting. I agree with the analogy you used by comparing driving to playing chess... constantly planning your next few moves and escapes by anticipating the moves of others based on traffic patterns and road conditions at any given time

In racing, there's a saying that 95% of the people on the road consider themselves excellent drivers.
After several years of competing at the national level, I'm resigned that my talent only puts me in the top 35-40% nationally. I think the more interesting question is what defines a good pilot? Is there some sort of magic ratio of "arrivals" to "landings" that signifies a good pilot? I would like to think that getting a plane back on the ground in re-usable condition every single time makes a good pilot, but Sully was a good pilot and made a name for himself by not even putting that plane onto the ground and most certainly not in flyable condition.....

Hijack alert.
Samurai, we’re twins - kind of. I also have a ‘19 DG X6///M and my lease is up in October too. What are you thinking? I’ll get past the new ass on the X6 but I’m not a happy camper with these crazy 21” and 22” wheels on the new X6///M on Our lovely NY roads. Can’t imagine winters with those small side walls. I’m getting different opinions on whether 20”s will fit for a winter set up. Are you going to stick with the X6? |

On the road a good driver is predictable. You know what he is doing and he does not cause any situation to slow or impede the flow to traffic they also moving right to allow faster traffic to pass.

My lease is up in October as well, so right now I'm planning to start my build of a TB2 / AD Gray X6MC around august so I can swap out in October. I actually like the rear (definitely the aggressive front end) of the new model, so I'm more torn between color options than the styling. I know you and others usually go between winter and summer tire sets, but I'm a bit lazy, don't drive as much as others and have put much effort into pothole dodging skills over many years... so I've been running on 22's all year round since my first X6 35i (2009). Not to say that I haven't had issues. Over the past 12 years of doing this, I've had to replace two driver's side wheels/ rims and tires due to pothole damage. Since you are an attentive and experienced driver, I believe you'll be ok during ownership with the thin side wall tires on your new car later this year and if you plan on continuing the trend of swapping winter to summer set ups, even more so.

I mostly judge by their best time around Laguna Seca
Not sure why you chose this of all things to call out. It's not illegal (at least not here in CA) and it's not necessarily dangerous or inconvenient to others either

I just think it adds potential risk in busy intersections by changing lanes in the middle of it. It's not illegal in CA but not advisable either. |

I haven't seen anyone mention turning on headlights when it's dark out. Every day I see multiple people guilty of this and it's dangerous, especially around dusk. It's like people think as long as they can still see things around them, they feel it's not necessary to turn on their headlights.
Ones driving when it's pitch black out without their lights on, I can never comprehend how they cannot recognize they're not turned on. |
