Caliper Rush Question
Hey guys,
There is some rust on my front and rear calipers on my 2011 BMW 535i xdrive f10, it looks like just the one metal piece that got rusted, is that possible to get just piece replaced without replacing the whole caliper? I believe the rusty part is the brake pad retaining clip. Part 34116799386 on standard braking systems: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=34_2455

yes once you replace them they're going to rust again. you're better off painting the whole caliper assembly to prevent rusting. I don't know why BMW did not do this as I've seen brand new cars on the lot with rust on the calipers already? if you're not looking for anything that stands out there's quite a few members who painted their calipers black and silver. for me I did mine gold only to blend with my wheels. but after a few years the paint is still holding up and no RUST!

I think for those in winter areas road salt also contributes to the rusting. at least that I notice the first year I owned mine

I'm betting it's due to the salt.
You might not even need to replace the piece if you have a rotary tool with a metal brush. You can shave off the rust then spray paint it in the same session to protect it in the future. Honestly the clip is just a guard so unless it rusts all the way through I don't expect it to become an issue. It just might be bothersome if you don't like the look :P |

This is great advice. Glad to see that this piece is replaceable. My brake retaining clip rusted so bad its basically bright orange. I think the guy who washes my car may be using super aggressive chemicals on the wheels to get the brake dust off. I wish there was an affordable option to get look of the M Performance or Brembo brakes without the huge capital investment.

Not neccesarily salt --- both of my 535i's (2012 & 2015) were bought and raised in Florida (West Bay side not ocean side), and both had the rust. Just painted them the same color as my wheels, and they looked great over all the years I had the cars.
