Hey all, I have the one-off F10 with the N52 straight six. Bit of a unicorn that I intentionally sought out as I like N.A. I6 engines, and the N52 in particular. Anyway, It has a really bad clattering sound coming from the intake manifold. Usually, but not always at around 1,500 RPM to about 2k. Not at idle, and then goes away when it revs up. Terrible sound.

Throwing codes P2006, P2017, P2014, which say intake manifold runner, and P2002b which is ???

I unplugged the larger DISA on the side, and sound didn't change. Presuming it is the smaller DISA underneath? Something else? I'm good at just bolting and unbolting things, but not really troubleshooting, and pulling the manifold really intimidates me.

So is this take it into the shop thing, or possible DIY? Thanks for the consideration!

I haven't had an N52 in a few years but, If I'm not mistaken, those DISAs are prone to falling apart, sending pieces like the pin into the engine via the intake (and ruining the engine).

I recommend you re-target some of your internet searches to zero in on the DISA failure modes, and up the priority from "annoying noise" to "critical" and either DIY or tow it immediately. Hopefully no pieces have been ingested already.

Because it's a unicorn, the F10 community probably won't be a ton of help, but there should be lots of info from the E90 community.

Thanks for the reply and recommendations!!! I'm an E90 guy, so that's why I was drawn to this build in the first place But now it may be biting me back! DISA has never been a problem in any of the E90/91s I've had, which is ironic. The newer fancy version is falling apart on us!

Indy says it's just noise from valve/valve cover, and ignore it. Uhhhhhm, okay, I guess...

Also aid accessory belt needs replacing, so I ordered one I'll do in a couple days.

Did get trans flush/filter while there. I'm not a fan of that job, so money well spent.

Back to DISA being the problem... used a stethoscope and placed it on the alternator and the manifold to figure out the origin. 100% the manifold. Now trying to decide if I can do DISA valves without taking off the manifold. Outside looks very doable, the the one underneath, tough to say the least.

Oh yeah, I talked to the actual mechanic, and the above-mentioned noise from valve cover is actually the PCV valve. Joy.

Follow up: DISA valve. Only one was bad, but went ahead and replaced both just for lolz. Still annoyed at the first shop that misdiagnosed it as the alternator pulley.
